Very nice, but again optimistic pricing on one of the least loved E39 engines.

I know what you're saying, but I think the engine will start to matter less and less. It of course depends on what you're looking for, but as these cars age, finding them in the sort of condition that looks to be in will become harder and harder.

If you're looking for one in great condition, you'll have to start compromising somewhere, and I don't think the engine is a terrible place to start. Finding one in a similar condition with the 4.4 V8 or the 3 I6 could involve a bit of a wait now.

If I was looking for a tidy saloon, I would be off to look at that, even with the less desirable engine. I may even go with 100 x £50 notes in my pocket, and try to knock a bit more off to spend on some wood to replace the aluminium trim.

Not a barge, but I wanted to confess my sins amongst like minded folk.

2 owners, 93,000 miles, MOT to July 13, Tax to March 13, new Dunlops, new exhaust and FMSH. Bought by me for £600

Needs tidying, but a good base to start from.

You'll be aware that they're inexplicably poor on fuel for a 1 ton, 1.6 trundler?

He's got a Chim, i'm sure he'll have seen worse wink

I did find the same with mine too, I guess it comes downs to having to rev the nuts off it to get anywhere. At least with a Chim you get an epic noise and a bit of pace for your crap economy!

Not that bad...well our old 93 Eunos was OK.

Don't forget what I'm comparing it to, the Lexus is terrible.

Careful what you spend on it - I paid £900 for a similar age import earlier this year, but when I started playing with it I ended up splurging about £2,500 on top of the price; and it's not supercharged yet. Suspension, exhaust, brakes, wheels, tyres, labour, plus the usual fixing niggles on a ~20yr old car. Ouch.

We get c.30mpg from ours, mixed A roads and urban. An Elise with a 1.6 K-Series and similar-ish weight and power would get 45. I love it to bits, but they're no better on fuel in my experience than, say, a Z3 2.8 with an extra 200kg and 70% more power.

Granted compared to the LS, for urban stuff, it'll be c.50% better?

This will be kept standard, just fettled to sort a few niggles that need attention and that's it. I'm tired of spending £££ on my cars and so is my bank manager hehe

Besides, I will always choose the Chim over the MX when the sun is shining and the roads are calling.

With the benefit of hindsight, this is the best way to do it with an MX5 laugh
