Alas, I'm not quite in the position to buy this particular example but it has got me thinking about them in a lot more detail. The supply of cars available for between £5-6k had dried up or where looking incredibly ropey, and to be honest an initial outlay of £6k is hefty enough for me as it is - The most I've ever spent on a car is a grand!
I have been considering X308s for a while too, but I don't think I could quite love a X308 as much as I should do knowing that a X350 is attainable (barely). Then there is the S Type R, but again I think the XJR is far prettier, its bigger, better speced and it is lighter . The only reason I'd go for one is because I could afford a half decent, low miler whilst XJRs are well in the six figures on the odometer for the money.
I suppose that is my main hesitation, going in at the bottom end of the market on a car that commanded £60k less than 10 years ago. I know financially its going to be far from cheap to run, but I don't want a continuous money pit.
Distressingly logical thinking, ive never spent much over 1k on a car n if i was spending that it wouldnt be on a very leggy xjr lovely though it looks.I have been considering X308s for a while too, but I don't think I could quite love a X308 as much as I should do knowing that a X350 is attainable (barely). One things for sure with xj's n thats that they're not going up in price so sooner or later the right car will appear in budget.

Imagine we fell through a time portal into 2002 and were bizarrely still posting in Best Smokre Barges 1-5 Large.
It's amazing how comparatively crap, relatively speaking the cars in this thread would be.
Hmm, Senator 3.0 24v, Carlton GSi 3000, Cavalier V6 CDX, Mondeo V6 Ghia X. Plus lots of W124s, W140s, E34s and E32s. It's amazing how comparatively crap, relatively speaking the cars in this thread would be.
..... Nice odd ball one Audi 2.2 5 cylinder GT Coupe (the angular one 81-90ish) very tough things
I reckon that around 1990 was the turning point, stuff built after that date had better rust proofing so didn't rot away in front of you and fuel injection/electronic ignition for reliable running.

Evening all. Went to see the 6 Lambos from the collection that are over in London. The Muira is lovely. I'll find some barges for Fox- to criticise tomorrow.
Sorry Louie, I didn't spot that you were still heading over, I'd have ducked out and headed overIncidentally, the Inspection II of the road bike world, including new chain and brake blocks, and a full strip down, clean, put back together and set up cost £172. I'm expecting the MOT on the 540i is significantly less. It's an odd world we live in.

If you follow the photobucket link there's a video on there with a lot of creepy 'Silence of the Lambs' like heavy breathing topped off by the seller revving the M535i to the red line from cold I'm oot!

Checking in, will post later on today
ETA - out of interest, what is wrong with the E60? I have to say, I really didn't like the look of them when they came out but they are growing on me now. Mate's Dad had a 530d M Sport Auto and it was a nice car, certainly fairly brisk and nice seats in the front.

I wouldn't dismiss the x308 - they're a very beguiling car indeed.
Absolutely. Since I've had mine the only non-routine maintenance / consumable I've had to do is to change the supercharger belt and pulleys to the newer design, which because I was feely lazy I got the garage to do, at about £300 all in.The biggest cost with them is fuel. I've done 5000 miles in mine, and it has cost me about £2300 in petrol to do it.
I'll be sad to see it go, to be honest.

No nav so maybe not quite. All the things like sport steering wheel, sports suspension etc would have been separately specced back then, but it would have been much cheaper just to buy the Sport model instead when that was launched a year or so later.Did those extras really cost £8K?
Electric seats, leather, xenons would each have been over a grand and I bet the sunroof would have given little change from that figure. Probably £5-6k of options.
Never thought I'd say this about a car at Charles ironside, but this looks decent value.......
