If car manufacturers really cared about in-car audio they'd be sourcing kit from the likes of Krell/Sonus Faber etc etc. But only hi-fi enthusiasts would really appreciate/pay for that kind of stuff. And to most of us, it makes little difference.
Linn used to supply Aston with systems but rumour was they dropped it for a cheaper (B&O) alternative.

Classic FM sounds fantastic on the Bose ( the first owner was to mean to pay five grand for the Bang and Olafsson option)
I prefer to use my Bose to listen to Radio 4. Nothing better for engaging the brain. Mind you, Bang and Olufsen stuff is supposedly mostly Phillips under the hood! And the B&O home hi-fi kit was described to me by someone in the know as a functionally pretty lifestyle brand for women but of little interest to serious hi-fi enthusiasts. So don't feel too disappointed that you don't have little B&O speakers popping up on turrets in the cabin!

You are assuming that knowledge gained in home Hi-Fi systems is readily transferable to in car Hi-Fi. The listening environment is not the same so no point comparing brands between the two.

I suspect the in car systems by Linn / B&O are re badges of systems designed by car audio specialists, perhaps signed off by the respective Hi Fi companies.

Have a read of the TechRadar review of the super-duper spanking system in the Evoque for some thoughts on car audio.

Bang & Olufsen belongs in the vulgarian's chariot, non? presumably it may only be specified with "privacy" glazing and 21" black wheels.

Does no manufacturer offer a motor car of substantial qualities these days? H Piech's Phaeton I thought was the only one, but puny diesel only rather rules it out. But I digress.

Diesel only?

The last true refuge, the Lexus LS, has been restyled into just another onanomobile. It is over.

A Jag XJ in frumpy colours is all we have left.

What cc diesel is it? I agree that 1.9 TDis can be a bit unimpressive, but some of the 3, 3.2, 3.5 and 4 litre jobbies favoured by our Cherman friends are very quiet but have a lot of grunt and pretty good acceleration times

3.0 V6, 240PS. Yawn. I read Merc will be offering the next S-Class with a 4-cylinder, 2.1litre diseasel. It is already available in every other range except the CL and SL. It is all about the show, these days. How long until you can buy a S-Class with no engine at all, its purpose being merely to stand stationary on the drive of your executive 4 bed detached to impress the neighbours? with dark tinted windows it wouldn't even need seats!

Onanomobile: love it.

Hmm....the current base model large execs even if equipped with 4 cylinder diesels are a lot more powerful than the base models of 10 years ago. 728i's, S280/S320's, A8 2.8's etc.....all of the current diesels are much faster than the likes of those.

10 years of selling 10 a year stilted the appeal of offering the full range. The diesel is still a great, great car, mind. Wouldn't want to have to fix one though, some scary stories about.

But of course a luxury cars engine choice is not simply about power alone. It's about smoothness and refinement which a 4 cylinder diesel, no matter how good, simply does not offer in the same way as a lower power 6 cylinder petrol (or diesel).

At some point the focus of a luxury car moved from providing a luxury driving experience to providing the most bling for the lowest monthly payment - be that made up of company car tax or a lease cost.

And it's understandable but that doesn't stop it being a shame. A great shame.

Those cars you described have 6 cylinder engines. They aren't about speed, they're about the waft and smoothness. A 4 pot diesel going slightly quicker won't feel as luxurious ad a slightly slower 6 pot. Unless, you've missed a large point of 6+ cylinder engines? wink

Except the diesel will have far more torque than the 6 pot, so won't need its neck wringing to get it to move along. In big, modern luxobarges the noise of the engine rarely enters the cabin without the window down, so that doesn't need to be a consideration.

Quick question - Merc C240, I think about 97ish. Good condition but some scratches on body, new tyres all round, pads up front, MOT and tax are both only a few weeks old. One owner from new (well, one company) in a burgundy colour with a tan-ish interior. 120k on the clock. Amazingly, FSH, 90% with MB.

Fits the bill for what I need right now and although I accept they are not the most thrilling cars, I need a smoker to get me through the winter (live in london so heavy snow and ice are really not a huge deal). Owned loads of barges but know little about the early C class but seems to be pretty bullet proof.

Based on description, what would you lot think the thing is worth and are they ok cars?

Cheers!
