OK Mr Pretender, roll on a year or so's time and you need to replace the Golf and the Porsche with a do everything car. You've met someone and had twins so you need an estate. Which 5 series touring do you go for, the 550D or the 550i?
What's wrong with the M5?

Needs to be a touring.

Same question Dan, which would you pick?

Whichever one I preferred the drive of. I don't do enough miles to need the economy of a diesel, so it'd come down to whichever I enjoyed more.

ETA - I'd be more likely to chose an X5 4.0d

But I'll still have a petrol toy.

Considering the mileage, this old Merc estate is in remarkably fine fettle:

Got to be worth a bid under 1500 notes surely?

Looks great, but the rolling road of 208hp doesn't sound too fantastic.

So I wonder whether an E39 530i Sport would be a reasonable compromise.
It's a brilliant all-rounder and perfectly adequate for all sane people. However...

But would I regret not going for the full-strength one? Would I regret 'compromising'? Will all the anguish and fear over costs and reliability disappear when I turn the key?
...from personal experience, the answers to all those questions are in the affirmative.

This moral dillema has resulted in my journey from 3.2 X300 to 4.0 X300 and finally deciding on the full bore XJR....
Thanks chaps, most useful. I do wish prices weren't so variable on them, hopefully they won't start climbing in the next year or two.
