It's not a barge, but I feel it fits here better:

In a world populated with miserably tttified E36s, this is very appealing.

So, so right.

Unusual wheels - the centre caps from late E34 metric-alloys fitted to, what, 16" style 5s?

thumbup

Like that a lot. Still think the E36 shape is class.

Fair enough. To be honest I only looked at the pictures the other day, he's now updated the ad with pics of the work needing done etc. Looks like a good punt at that price.
Seems very honest advertiser. TBH I thought the work would be a lot more than that shown in the pics.
Never meant to imply anything else, in fact I bought my current E320T from him.

Do you know how much road tax is for one of these? My mate made a big deal out of the note on the tax disc about dual fuel. I though pre 2006 the maximum is 250 which is what i have on my S4.
If it's registered with the DVLA as dual fuel you get a discount off the std rate , not much though, £10 I think
If it's pre March 06 and over 225 gns CO2, then the tax is £270 normally, £260 with LPG registered with the DVLA.

Looking likewise at your history, pretty much everything you've had (some very nice stuff) has been 'quick'. If that's the vein you wish to continue to jab, a W124 probably won't get you very high.

They are on the far side of the modern : old line in my opinion, whereas an E34 (and certainly an E39) sits on the modern side in terms of the way they handle and how the controls feel in comparison to a brand new car.

That said, 'old Mercedes' is a tune that nobody could follow back then, and nobody is trying to follow now. In things like the action of the door handle, ker-thunk of the bonnet and silence of the electric roof, they really are a cut above a BMW.

In other ways, like accuracy of steering and body control and treading the fine line of being good at cruising AND good at hustling, you have to credit BMW.

My E39 523i SE on 15" wheels was the equal of the W124 for 70mph lolloping, but was more fun and much safer to hustle. Yet the W124 has a serenity that the E39 never matches.

The BMW is good at lots of easily measured things - a Daly Thompson. The W124 is an old Oxford science professor - empirically useless at many things, but embodied with a depth and soul and talent for the more esoteric things in life.

And, don't forget the three pointed star. It is ridiculous how much that little trinket adds to the driving experience. For me, anyway, it brings all sorts of warm-and-fuzzies to slide into the firm seat, pull a heavy door closed with a thin, firm handle that mirrors the steering wheel, plug-in a proper key, unlatch the foot-brake and usher slowly forth. Even a £600 Mercedes banger still does that bit beautifully.

In summary - they are stately. A BMW will never be stately.
I enjoyed that - thank you smile Might give them another go; I no longer tear-arse around so performance isn't everything. And I guess the 500E might be the answer for that anyway.

Looks very much like it. Odd, but I like it all the same.

Me too. I think there's a huge renaissance to come for the E36. The trough it has sunk into is so very deep that few clean, straight examples will emerge the other side. The shape is so, so right I'm sure it will be a desirable car in 10 years.

Such a shame the interior design is neither classic fish nor modern fowl, when all the BMWs around it as close contempoaries had such great cockpits.

I agree entirely.

I agree that the E36 has a 'rightness' about the whole shape. Looking at that, do you think it's been lowered? I'm no expert on the E36 and I dare say that part of it's 'rightness' is down to the car having a good stance, but that does look low to me given it's an SE and not a sport. The backbox looks cack too.

There was also: 318Ti Sport compact, 318iS Sport coupé, 323i Sport Touring and Convertible and the Saffa-built 318iS saloon.

Was the "Sport" Kit an option on all the runout tourings? I can't find my price list from the era and I vaguely remember thinking I could have had a 318 Sport Touring had my car allowance stretched that far.

Hows about a W124 300E-24 for less than a bag?

Bad era Merc, missing a few key images but does seem honest. Either way its an E500 for 3 bags and infinitely preferable to the previous gen one (imo).

Didn't rustproofing improve post 2002? I thought that "bad era" was the W210 and the W211 (next gen number I think), was OK?

An E500 for £3,500 isn't bad though I suspect from the ad that there is some paint damage (e.g. never been in an accident - but you wouldn't think to look at it)
