Hi all

What's the cheapest way of doing 100k of reliably over 5 years? Presumably a diesel and one with not too many miles on to avoid maintenance and vehicle replacement. Also must be comfy for motorway commuting.

Suggestions welcome!!

Either buy say a Kia Cee'd brand new for £15k. Which is manufacturers warranty 100k for 7 years.

Or buy say a £2k Jag merc BMW 5 series ad run it till it breaks scrap it buy another.
Or buy something boring like a Mondy to do it.

Also frankly an E36 M3 would happily foot. Infact any car could happily do it if you service it properly even buying a 150k car milage to start with.

As fun as the M3 would be, it would be far off cheap it terms of fuel burn and depreciation.

So far the cheapest way I can calculate is a Mondeo / Insignia diesel for around £8k.

Pug 405 1.9D. Buy for bargain basement money, run on a shoestring (and, if you wish, chip fat!), with typically Gallic ride.

My dad had had a 2009 520d from new, done just over 100,000 miles. Never had any problems and it's averaged about 49mpg, mostly motorway miles and pretty hard driving.

If you were confident about taking a car like that to higher miles, that would be a perfect sort of car to do big miles in. Its supremely comfy, economical and cheap to service if you can find a decent specialist. And you could probablyy buy an ex company car for under £10k with those sort of miles that would keep going for ever

I'd say you need a big engine and an auto box then you cannot go wrong.

Consumables for any car over 100k
Tyres looking at 3-5 sets
Discs 2 sets all round
Brake pads 3 sets at the very least
Oil changes min 5 changes
Brake fluid changes every two years so three in this instance
Coolant change 3 needed min
Bushes if buying brand new none if used 30-60k you will need a complete set
Wheel bearings will need 4 if you buy a 3 year old car or 5 years old car
Possibly new starter and alternator
Filters pollen oil fuel air 5-8 sets
Engine mounts if you buy a 5 year old
New shocks and springs all round of you buy 5 year old.
New car battery for sure in that timescale.
Wipers new sets once every year
Depreciation - purchase price dependant
New radiator
New air con compressor
Air con annual servicing

So that will be your cost base if you buy a big car things will be more buy smaller they will be cheaper

Big engine, I spose so, although when you're doing oil changes for an 8 litre sump it can get expensive.
Auto Box?! Urm. No. To be guaranteed good gearbox lifetime you need something with a sturdy getrag gearbox.

My recommendation would be as low mileage a 1995-1998 E36 BMW 318i you can find. Chain cam, strong gearbox, cheap to service/serviceable easily yourself, only known faults are suspension issues (cheap), hedgehog resistor (also cheap) and some simple ABS troubles.

Find one on 15" wheels or standard steelies for extra cheapness.

Difficulty now is to find a standard one with low miles in good nick. Budget £1500 spend on the car in the first place to secure a nice one and off you go.

If we're talking cheapest - Mk1 Ford Focus with the old 1.8td engine (the same one as that million mile mondeo bloke had).

Actually what about something American or Aussie with a LS V8 and their ability to cover lots of miles with minimal servicing?

Good point Corvette C4

5.7ltr LS1 unit with a lazy 200bhp peak power at 4,000 rpm.
Oil change every 100k

V8 lovely and you'll not lose a penny on it.

Or a studabaker or Buick or Lincon
