That's not a great generalisation IMO; the issue people have is specifically with the M6 vs the 640d, not skunkwork versions vs diesels in general. I doubt people were saying when the E46 M3 came out that they'd rather have the 330d, because the M3 offered something significantly beyond the 330d's capabilities in the real world (you know, the one that matters). The M6 doesn't appear to offer much over the 640d in the real world other than maybe the acceleration (which isn't far off the 640d) and looks (which are pretty similar to the standard M-sport package anyway). For most people it just isn't worth the significantly higher price tag, much higher running costs and much higher deprecation.I guarantee you in the USA, Middle East, and Asia (where this will will sell) no one will be talking about diesels.
It used to be worth it going for the ///M, now it doesn't seem to be.
When you look at the price in the USA which is closer to £75,000 before options it looks a very reasonable car. BMW will sell a few dozen in the UK each year, where in certain markets they will sell a few dozen in a week. Luxury car sales in Britain outside of London and the home counties are very few, ie cars over 80K....and I am sure that tooling RHD cars is somewhat expensive for BMW all things considered.

k about the weight, its not as if you have to lift it up physically. many of you would not even take it near the track, the same ones moaning on about getting the diesel version for fuel economy, residuals etc.Im sure most of you would not do driving on the road to say the weight was affecting it.
If it bothers some of you so much, go on a slim fast diet, take an enema before you drive, throw out most of the interior you dont want and surely you would savea lot of weight.

yes its big and heavy, but all german cars are getting heavier and heavier...
however it is a 2+2 that will hit 60 in around 4 secs and de-restricted would top over 200 mph, all that and it is still a very well made luxury car. IMO Not much can compete with that for the same money.

I agree with Wadeski, fk the price of fuel residuals economy etc. YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE. Too many Piston Heads in the Uk are a sell-out. All they do now is moan about almost every performance car offering, never satisfied and then when the manufacturers dont make them the get insulted or when they dont sell a certain model in the UK everyone is moaning.
I would never buy a diesel as a performance vehicle. I would only buy a commercial vehicle or workhouse, pointless for me, besides I would not do enough miles to warrant buying the diesel. Especially as it now costs so much more than petrol. Go to many other countries and diesel is cheaper.

ah, another new vs old comparison again. when i a brand new R8 V10 came along did you say too expensive, i can get a 3 year old xxxxx instead? in terms of actual car, the M6 is arguably more VFM.....more power than the R8 V10, back seats, nicer interior. just doesn't have the styling IMO. as a GT car it does sound good though. still, it wouldn't be where my money would go on a brand new car but the argument of money is moot, it's every bit as good a car (objectively, at least) as its rivals of similar, or more, cost.it does, however, make the M5 look like an utter bargain.
