....Mazda, PLEASE DO NOT BUILD IT! The best thing about the MX-5 is that it has never got involved over its 3.5 different version in the power wars which have plagued modern cars...let the others chase the headlines, 150Bhp is plenty for a lightweight car with good handling...
Although more power without more weight (i.e. tuning rather than wedging a great big V8 into it), so the balance remains the same isn't generally a problem, as long as the "normal" power cars are still available.KDIcarmad said:
I read somewhere a V8 had been put in a MK1!
Friend of mine on www.PlanetMX5.com has a mk1 V8 MX5.Sounds glorious on full chat down the A3!
well my guess is a taper throttle body conversion from SBD and a better exhaust manifold, about £2,500 and 204 horses. The only thing stopping me going for it on my daily was the management, no one had cracked the mx5 ecu (it controls EVERYTHING so you can't just rip it out and sling a standalone in there)
280bhp NA is only a cheque book away (about £10k) and 350bhp with SC and rods (about £4k)
the duratec is a really tunable little lump, the head is exceptional straight out of the factory, you really won't do any better aftermarket, once you have gone to the trouble of changing the rods/pistons, you can really push them for very little money.

I'm not a fan of "satin" black, but I think this would look amazing in it.
The colour scheme is, as some-one pointed out, very rover "streetwise".
Other than this, agreed with the caption: if it sounds anything like the racing version, it'll be great.
The Germans have gone wild with their pricing on their mildly interesting cars, and the legislation and fuel prices are discouraging high-powered cars at a frightening rate, I do think that 200~bhp-ish cars like this are the way forward for the near future. The japs (toyota & subaru, Mazda) seem to "get" this. Now honda, where's that S2000 replacement??

If Mazda did a Mazdaspeed option pack or similar, so you could buy a standard MX5 and have 205bhp for £2500, I think it would be a VERY popular option. I know its never going to happen mind.
All these people calling for it to be built - it will be, at least in spirit, it just won't be a Mazda.
The next Alfa Romeo Spider will share the MX5's platform, but will feature the 1750TBI Veloce engine, which can put out, IIRC, far in excess of 200bhp.
I'd imagine the results will be comparable.

Knowing Mazda pretty well, i'd say it's not far off being built. This wouldn't be doing the rounds or at Goodwood unless the intention was to build it.
I think the MX-5's overdue for more power, this will help bridge the gap until the new one arrives.
Looks great, as for the Rover comparisons, come on that was a hideous car!!!
205 should suit the chassi just right and whilst 150bhp is 'sufficient' in the current car, it was never going to set the world alight, I say watch out Toyobaru..
Can't wait to drive it.

That Mazda 2.0 is a cracker. It's the same as fitted to the Morgan +4SS & is a cracker. Better internals than the std Ford offering & will rev to 7700 out of the box.
Funny you should make the association...both 200(ish) BHP Duratecs and the Mazda is on the standard ECU.Trust some brit tuners to make a decent go at it: http://www.bbrgti.com/road_tests_item.php?road-tes...
