RE: PH Blog: heart versus head

good god the new 1 series is an ugly car. . . . i certainly dont think its going to get better with age either!
the front lights look too big for the front end as does everything above the lower grill, it just looks bloated in the head on pic, and the rear looks close to a DS3, and relatively slim compared to the head on view of the front

Seems I am in the minority that think the revised 1 looks better, although still no looker.
135i for me rather than the Golf, if I lived in the UK. Here in Switzerland I've had a few RWD BMWs and they were a pain in the backside in the snow, even with winter tyres. So would probably take the VW.

i have yet to drive a BMW that gets near its 'quoted' figures thats performance or economy.
No car gets near its official economy figures but that's not specific to BMW. And I've never heard anyone say that BMW quote faster performance figures than they can really achieve.Totally agree on the heart vs. head bit: IMVHO, cars today are objectively speaking so good that all of the "getting from A to B", running costs, practicality and other issues etc. are pretty much irrelevant and the "seemingly inconsequential matters of personal taste" become the really important, deciding factors.
With the two boxes discussed it would have to be the Golf, simply because I find the styling less offensive and there's otherwise not much in it.
The real winner would be an E87 130i though. How much are these in the UK at the moment? Probably less than a week of depreciation on either a new Golf or 1-Series...

So right about subjectivity though. Despite how good a car might be if you don't like it's looks would you really buy it? And then be seen in it?
It's like clothing only more expensive!
The BMW is ugly it could be the best car in the world but I wouldn't be seen in one.
It's an emotive subject.

As with most modern BMW's they do look a lot better "in the flesh" so to speak. The 1'er is growing on me now a bit. With the right spec (wheels, Msport etc) i suspect, that like a larvae turning into a butterfly, it will pupate into a more handsome car in the next year or so! (Ok, maybe that illustration is a simile too far, but you knwo what i mean ;-) BMW are masters at making sure their new platforms with plenty of early, mid and late life cycle impluse revisions designed into them!
The other thing i notice about a lot of modern FWD hot hatches etc is that the chassis is tuned to appeal on a short test drive with pretty fast "sporting" reactions and feedback, in order to attempt to mask the physical deficiencies in the layout. The BMW's seem to be a bit of an opposite pole, perhaps feeling too refined and smooth on a short test drive, but the longer you drive one, the better it becomes. You find yourself uncovering layers of ability (rwd, better mass distribution etc) as time goes on. Effectively the rwd layout gives a more linear response, but that can feel slightly unexciting at first, especially if you have just stepped out of something like a turbo Renault or Vauxhall hot hatch.........

"The simple fact that I would call myself a 'BMW man', though not a fanboy."
Riggers, I would go the other way, and the very fact that is was a BMW would stop me from chossing one in the first place. As you say, I can't explain why this this is, it just doesn't fit with me, and I guess the way I see myself! Golf in drag for me(scirocco)

Seconded. This four-potted future we live in makes me sad. Straight six would swing it for me too.
Absolutely. A creamy Munich straight 6 would be lovely. But it just wouldn't sell in significant enough numbers in today's climate, especially as a large amount of these will appear on fleets. It's hard enough to find fleet lists these days that will let you have anything petrol-powered.....As the £6 unleaded gallon approachs, the fact this will do 43mpg is a pretty strong selling point; annoying as that might be!

Can't agree. Saw a blue one just like this rounding a roundabout in Cardiff the other day. It looked a bit like a bathtub.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
