If the sytner guys are not using the dent removal option, they will be advised to do so as ultimately any estimate will be checked by and engineer (who is employed by the insurance company) before a decision is made on the outcome.

The bigger dent companies are in talks directly with the insurance companies to get it sorted out. A hail storm that has damaged cars to this level has not been seen in this country since 1994 so the bodyshops are completely unprepared to deal with it and most probably don't know that it is common practice to repair hail damaged vehicles with pdr. I would imagine it will take about 10 days or so for things to settle down and the plans to get finalised. Given the area affected and the amount of cars damaged I reckon it will take about 6 months to get the bulk of the repairs done with probably car dealership stock and rental companies taking priority. So probably best to be prepared for a bit of a wait until you know what is happening with your own cars!
I know what the larger insurance companies are doing, the people doing the discussing work for me.

OK back on topic.

I took my car to Sytner Leicester yesterday. They estimated the damage at ~£7500. With my insurance company's labour rate discount, it's going to cost them ~£6200.

New boot, bonnet, and paintless dent removal on the roof and other panels. If the dents are at all visible, they will then replace more panels.

My car is worth ~£13k at a guess, maybe £14k, so it doesn't look like it will be written off.

Oh well, at least my car will look shiny and new!

If valued at £10k or with your estimated value repairs would need to be £8000 for it to be written off

I'd be pretty annoyed if my car is valued at £10k as you've no chance of getting a 320d M-sport coupe with 55k miles on, full BMWSH for £10k!

You really think that a BMW approved bodyshop will return my car with different shade panels, fitted poorly?

I'm not an expert, but I would imagine then that a large proportion of cars on the road would be driving around with wonky panels and gaps, in different colours.

If indeed I get a car back with different shade panels, wonky fits, and gaps, I will be rejecting the work until it looks perfect. If this means a total respray, then so be it. I am not obligated to accept a car with poor work.

My parents golf was involved in a rear end shunt a couple of years ago. Prior to that, some tt keyed it. It was repaired at a friends bodyshop for the keying, and an insurer's approved bodyshop for the shunt. I can't tell any work has been done on it.

I would seriously find a better bodyshop if thats your experience!

It depends on colour, but if metallic, panel repaint is always visible by shade difference. They will have to blend in whole areas of the car, which in my experience will then leave you with other visible tell tales. Dent-less paint removal is hit and miss (no pun intended) some can be done to 'near' perfect, others (on creases and hard to reach areas) can only be done on a best effort basis. I would rather a cheque from the Ins Co than have it repaired but then I'm a fussy beggar.

My brother in-law lives in Burbage and has just had 180 roof tiles replaced. Luckily both cars were out the area. His friend had just bought a Ferrari 360, this predictably, has been written off.

I've seen work from two BMW approved workshops. Just because they are BMW approved doesn't mean they are good.

Though having said that problems are usually instantly rectified through the approved route. Just don't expect any bodyshop to get it right first time.

I appreciate what you're saying, but you would really hope that Sytner BMW Leicester (who do their own bodywork) would really know to get things correct!

And like I said, if they don't, it will go straight back to them, with them supplying me a replacement car, at their cost! biggrin
