My mate bought a '60 plate transporter in white with low miles, £13000
Since purchasing it the front seats have been converted to nearly new C class mercedes heated electric leather with swivel bases,
The rear has seats, floor has been covered in durable rubber, tinted windows in doors, carpeted walls and roof with extra lighting, built in inverter. Fog lamps
He has spent £1500 on this.

Overall £14500.

£39000??? easy come...

Yup, I've seen some dodgy mods done to transporters for next to nothing. Horses for courses though when it comes to quality, either buy a kit and do it yourself or get a professional outfit to kit your van to yacht standards. This van though, is bloody pricey.

I like these guys, they use all the best brands and you don't have to pay 'VW tax' on some chavvy Sportline bumpers and whatnot;

Not much point in having all that power if you have to stick to van speed limits... and it looks naff... and it costs a fortune.

Ordinary Transporter is a lovely thing though.

You need to check the speed limits for these things before you get carried away!

I have a Transporter 2.5TDI which goes like a rocket however one of my guys has been done at 65mph on a dual carriage way and another one at 57 on an A road (speed limit for vans over a certain weight is 60mph on dual carriage ways and 50mph on A roads)

The speed Nazis in their little vans know this and seem to target vans. A car derived van under 2tons have the normal limits. Morris minor van at 70mph safe?

Not sure if having windows in the side doors gets around this (i very much doubt it) or whether different limit applies to the mini bus versions.

It also applies to a Ford Transit connect which is about 50Kg over the limit but doesnt classify a car derived van. A Fiesta obviously does.

Well you learn something new every day, thanks for that, I wonder where my van falls in this, I have a VW caddy maxi, it's got five seats like a car with sliding doors to get to the back ones, like a people carrier then it has a van section at the back to sling your tools and what not in. It's a little unusual. It's also indecently quick for a van.

Now I didn't know that about van speed restrictions - I always assumed up to 3.5t was the same is a car which was a real ignorance is bliss type thing!

I wonder how many people in jazzed up pick up trucks know this as I thought the need to get over the 2 tonne limit was required to get commercial vehicle tax or something (once again I'm using all my ignorance!!)??

Its an great bit of kit, best van on the road by far, but im a little biased, having to drive one every week day !!!!

I also have the BiTdi and love it! 40k a year and averages just over 30mpg which is pretty good IMO considering the weight it carries!

Mine...




Has the toys, just no bling bodykit wink

I'm writing this from Nice, where I've just travelled down from the UK in what I would consider the "best van in the world", a Discovery 4 Commercial , which is pretty much the same price as the VW by the time you've added a few bits , and enjoys all the same BIC benefits . It also comes with an eight speed auto box, a fabulous twin turbo diesel three litre V6 and it dosen't look like a van, especially in white ( which knocks £700 off the list price ) ( somewhat negated by having the wheels painted black !!!!! ). Clearly when it comes to carrying capacity the VW wins, but in every other respect the Dicovery Commercial is a limo , and a spectacularly effective company car.

In order to have the same speed limits as a car (i.e. 60/70/70 on single/dual/motorway) a commercial vehicle (van, truck, anything) must be both car derived and have a max laden weight less than 2 tons. If it does not meet both of these requirements then the speed limits are 50/60/70. Link here to the source:

In practice most vans bigger (and many smaller) than an Astra Van fall outside of this so should adhere to the lower speed limits. Many vans that are under the weight limit are not car derived (e.g. Citroen Nemo or Berlingo) so also have to adhere to the lower limit although I've not managed to find how car derived is defined in law. I've had a quick look at VW's website and the entire Caddy range is too heavy so must adhere to the lower limits.

I don't think the Sportline is great value. I started with a clean slate and bought the basic van and added my own bits for a lot less money:

These things are so good. I've done thousands of miles in them. High speed euro long hauls, whizzed around mountain passes, lugged all manner of stuff about. I love em. Would go the custom way rather than the Factory route though. I think the Silver one above looks great too.
