Remove the OBD socket and tuck it up into the wiring loom. Replace it with a blank 'dummy' one! Thief will assume his system doesn't work and go somewhere else!
This is what I would do - Only I'd wire every data pin to +12v - hopefully it'd blow up the scumbags interface adapter (I guess the data pins are usually +/-5v smile )!

I remember in the late 80's people wiring up hidden switches to disable the ignition - I honestly thought those days had long gone!!
Better to wire alternate pins to 0V and +12V! smile

He's safe, 2006+ using electric keys are affected. E46/E38 and E39s are safe

You're clearly a bigger expert on the media than me, but I've seen no evidence whatsoever that this is "how people do it."

Is it just BMW who are exposed here?
I don't believe so as a friend's Audi A5 was stolen using a similar technique.

Forgive my ignorance but they didn't start the car - they pushed it away?

Unless they pushed it around the corner then tried to start it, but if they've gone that far surely they wouldn't abandon it?
Push it round the corner then fire it up and drive off or straight into a waiting lorry or covered trailer. Keep noise to a minimum.

OK!

Would any BMW owners out there be interested if I was to supply (and fit?) an OBD socket which would (probably) blow up the thieving scumbag's kit and relocate the 'real' one?

I keep saying it in the hopes someone will listen. A £2 switch wired into the fuel pump or ignition loom and no OBD key programmer will start the car. Sure they could probably take the time to search for the switch, but that sort tend to not like lingering more than a few minutes assuming they even have a clue what they are looking for.

Another tactic would be disabling the OBD port. It is only used for diagnostics and servicing so no need to have it enabled on a daily basis. Crim sticks his programmer in, gets no joy with new key, gives up and goes away.

Any competent auto electrician could carry out either or both of those measures, though it is well within the realm of anyone who can cut and crimp wires.

It is a known problem, why sit back and hope someone else does something to fix the problem before it strikes you?.
Not sure I'd want to be cutting into any looms on a Warrantied £43k BMW. Surely that would void it?

Looks like I did the right thing moving from BMW to a Escort Cosworth smile Seems the Escort is harder to steal... just.

Feel for the OP. I cannot tell you how much I want a 1M but would never steal one. Hope its returned as they are rare already and I want one in a few years when the price comes down.

I would be interested for my M5. Only thing i would need to remember to do would be to leave a note or better still show the service manager at BMW when it goes in, where the real port is... As that could be expensive for the dealer...and ultimately me.

I think removing the original and pushing it out of the way then replacing it with a new dummy with a 9v battery may well be enough. I'll be selling them on ebay this week! smile

BMW, I would imagine, if the conversation on the internet is about stolen BMWs or BMWs that get stolen, using reprogrammed stolen BMW keys used to steal a BMW that will become stolen, they (I mean BMW), would not be happy at all.

Stolen opportunities for sales because of BMWs stolen due to reprogrammed BMW stolen keys will not be what the doctor ordered.

Hopefully no search engines looking for BMWs will mistake this thread for new BMWs or approved used BMWs or secondhand BMWs or even any BMWs for sale or in fact any BMW anywhere that is sold, new or used. This is clearly a thread about new and used BMWs being stolen because BMW (new and used) keys are being reprogrammed and allowing the new or used BMW (approved or not) to be stolen.

Hey - that was half my idea!! I demand 50% stake in all profits.

Anyway - simply wiring the pins to 12+ won't work - the interface is protected against miswired muppetry.
I'm thinking the data pins would be more effective with several thousand volts wink

So,
One of those £1 electronic fly swatter things from Poundland.
Rip out the circuity/inverter.
Some form of on/off sensing mechanism.
Plug in reader = ZAP!

This idea definitely © Dr Doofenshmirtz 2012

I don't think I quite understand what you are saying, could you perhaps clarify?? Maybe by mentioning more keywords?!

Not a bad idea for a story though.

Don't you think?
Absolutely, we're on it. This only went up yesterday, so Riggers is on the case this morning. A call will be going into BMW shortly, if it hasn't already.
Good news! I'm thinking about getting a recent(ish) BMW M3 so would be interested in BMW's response to this.

That's harsh. If I was attempting to do something regarding new or approved used BMW or BMWs that have been stolen using reprogrammed keys to affect search engines, I would probably have used more then just the words BMW, approved used, new, stolen or reprogrammed and included others, such as ultimate driving machine, 3 series, 5 series, 1 series and Z4, not to mention efficient dynamics, vanos and any number of other i-drive style new and approved BMW related shenanigans.

Nope, in my case I was just using the issue of stolen new or approved used BMWs to highlight that this thread is, mainly, about people using reprogrammed keys to steal BMWs, be they new, approved used or just plain old new M6 ultimate driving machines.
