Ok, apologies if this has alrady been posted (at work so can't spend long trawling this thread!) ...

... this thread has made it on to The Register. The same article points at a very interesting presentation by a guy called Rob Van den Brink at a tech security conference earlier this year, about OBD security weakness. Interesting comments suggesting you can also easily access the OBD system via the wireless tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS)!eek
I actually think most of his comments are somewhat wise of the mark....

getting access to the OBD and or can bus's is not the issue per say, it's the fact that access to the CAS unit (that controls key security etc) is un-coded.

Shocking!

I asked on another thread who wins. Well it's certainly not the BMW owners that have their cars stolen:

It's the first feature so you don't have to listen to all of it. It'll play if you click on the nice image with the magpie and fox.

Thatcham? You're having a laugh aren't you!

3) insurance co's really are not doing themselves any favours here
4) BMW clearly don;t give two hoot's about their customers

BMW had a court case in the USA over allowing acces to the OBD, but this weakness is down to their EWS4 system not from OBD access for third parties.

Allowing full diagnostics should not be a problem, if they want to secure car on a key basis and can't work out how then returning to the old key issuing format should work, just allow independents access based on details within a disarmed car or if the keys are lost the owner from the DVLA, which is given out to just about anyone from clampers to debt agencies.

If they can't do that then BMW could spend some time fixing EWS4 and still allow independents to read and reset faults, for instance the airbag warning light (now a failure for MOT) can result from a plug being detached underneath the seat due to poor placement and securing, and if that's only reset by BMW it will cost £80 instead of £10.

The response from Thatcham was unbelievable.

I guess for them to alter their 5 star security rating would mean them having to admit they made a mistake?

It seems Thatcham, insurance companies and BMW are all as bad as each other when it comes to shafting the Great British public.

That poor bloke after LV accused him being involved in the theft of his own car and having some former police officer turn up at his home to take his photo he's stuck with using LV as he's lost all of his NCB.

What an utter shower of brown waste matter.

So all three of them can't admit they've made a mistake and they can't possibly be wrong and will do everything in their power to shaft the customer?

thatcham and the like are self-serving bodies. They can't admit they're wrong.

Cloned keys are to be covered on Radio 4's You and Yours at 12 Noon today.

It's a bit like Watchdog but on Radio 4.
