As has been discussed previously, a stoplock through the wheel stops this kind of theft
There isn't a 'stoplock' being made which can't be removed in 2-3 mins using a can of compressed air and a hammer...

I thought it was to get it out of earshot before starting it up and raising suspicion.

Interior 'scanning' alarms have always been shonky and crap for this stuff - the way the technology works it's VERY hard to cover the whole interior without making 'false' triggers commonplace.

False triggers keep dealers very busy - and having to take your car into the dealer because the alarm keeps going off is bloody annoying and tends to cause manufacturers to score poorly on those customers satisfaction indexes.

Of course in this case there's a super-super-simple solution - if the alarm is armed and something connects to the OBD port, it should go off surely?

Then there's no need to fk around with the interior sensors...
Agreed, that's what I was getting at, not that it omits 4 inches, I can understand that, but the fact that the OBD port can be accessed without triggering it so it is put out of sight of the interior sensors, and accessible through a window?
That's imho the biggest design flaw.

Simple to sort, put a lockable cover over the OBD port. My BMW has a key that goes with the electronic doodad that passes for a key, so it wouldn't be beyond the wit of man to make the OBD port lockable...

They do, less noise that way, and more time before the car is reported stolen and any possible tracker fitted activated.........

yes, or like 405dogvan suggested:

alarm armed -> OBD port "used" -> sound alarm

Or, like you said, an alarm-triggered lockable cover.

In reply to previous poster about the tracker - you can buy a 'jammer' from Amazon of all places

See this

Only £20 and it blocks GPS

Didn't know it was this easy !!

Seems to make Trackers redundant if they are this easy to overcome ?
" the use and sale of GPS jammers is illegal"

Can't the manufactures just put the OBD port in the engine bay? Chances are if the car is being serviced/diagnosed anyway that the bonnet will be up. You would need to alarm the bonnet, but I'm sure most bmws have this?

Will also save demolishing the interior trim looking for the obd port on a new vehicle.

Have a similar story to this but they weren't quite successful, my neighbor was coming home from the pub and saw 2 people tampering with my car (Audi RS4) and managed to scare them off, fortunately they hadn't damaged anything but I did visit my neighbor the next day with a rather large bottle of Whisky lol.

Kind of puts me off buying an E90 M3, especially given I live in the East London/Essex area where a lot of these seem to get stolen.

So PistonHeads, with all your industry contacts, I assume you have accidentally sent a link to BMW PR.

First time this story has made it to the front page of a huge motoring website?

or put in a new OBD port and reroute the wiring there, whilst wiring the original port up to something very high voltage/ampage.

More than that - we spoke to BMW beforewriting the story, but they don't feel they can make any more comment than that which we've quoted.
