[quote=Mastodon2]I'd say a Volvo S60; great seats, excellent air conditioning, great sound system, huge footwells so plenty of space to move around and stay comfortable, the ride was soft and comfortable. Couple that up with a brilliant 5 cylinder engine that was so, so smooth and extremely quiet and it was a great car to be driven around in, but no slouch either and quick enough to make decent progress down straighter roads.
I like the look of the Volvo S60. It's a handsome car and I've heard that Volvo seats are among the best. I heard the S60 is quite cramped in the back though. Thanks for all the suggestions. I wondered whether there were any viable alternatives but it looks like regardless of merit, it has to be German (Audi/Mercedes or possibly a Phaeton) for the right premium/luxury image or possibly a Jaguar XJ as the patriotic choice! Probably a bit overbudget but has anyone had any first-hand experience of the XF in terms of comfort?

B'stard Child said: Boot is frankly uselss for this size car
- I can't even get two reasonably sized suitcases in the boot
or
- 3 wheels and tyres 15 x 7J with 205/60 Tyres only just fit in and even then some careful juggling of positions required to shut the boot
let alone 3 prostitutes (I'll conceed they coul;d be accomodated if you cut em up and bin bagged them)
What I Did manage to get in was a complete 3.0 12V straight six engine with the manifolds on (I did have to take the ancilaries off) but it just happened that length of the engine from flywheel to front pulley was less than the length of the boot and height of the engine from sump to rocker cover/inlet manifold was less than the width of the boot and width of the egine was less than the avaliable height.
I did take the carpetted floor out of the boot and fitted a sheet of 18mm thick chipboard in it's place
Best car for me ride was has always been Vauxhall/Opel Senator 3.0 CD 24V and that had a very usefull boot it also have fold down seats/and ski flap - from memory 6/7 full sized interior doors with the boot shut. A new low for boot space in an E38 - went to collect two new rear tyres for the summer wheels - OK they are 255/45 18's so not exactly small but how many could I fit in the boot............ Yep just one...... The other went on the back seat I really doubt the 3 prostitutes bit!!!

Rather oddly, a transit van used as a taxi. Was clubbing out with some friends and i felt very tired to called a cab using one of the bouncers outside. 5min later a transit van arrives to take just me home. Could have easily carried at least 7 other people in the van. Sat in the back it was very comfty, soaked up all the bumps but didn't feel wolloy.

I really doubt the 3 prostitutes bit!!! It's an odd shape but large. I got a full length piano keyboard in.

Willys Jeep..(ok, not really).
I think the most comfortable car I have ever owned was the E39 540i with the optional seats that had a back that was hinged in the middle. You could drive the thing to the moon and still have no fatigue.

Lotus Evora S. I was amazed by how well it coped with uneven, potholed back roads when I test drove it. Maybe not so comfy if you would sit in the back!

From my limited memory, the most comfortable thing I've ridden in the back of, was a Citroen BX.

Comfiest car ever passengered in: S-Class Merc (dunno what era, this would have been circa 1996) Comfiest car ever passengered in that I've owned: My E39 528i
Worst, by a country mile: Pug 206CC. Horrific ride, incredibly noisy.
Notable mention: In the early 80s, my dad had a Wolseley 1800, and that was very very comfortable. When the gas suspension wasn't going "psssh", causing the car to sink down onto the stops on one corner, that is.

I'd say a VW Touareg 1, but it had minor flaws like the wind noise from that huge door mirrors, not really comfortable seats and thirsty, dull 3.2 petrol. So Audi A4 B8 for me - did 6000 miles in three weeks in rented car.

For a car I have owned, it had to be my old P38 Range Rover. The leather was soft and supple, the seats supportive, the ride sublime and it required almost no effort to drive. Imagine driving around in your front room........however it was like playing with a pet lion, it maybe soft and cuddly but you just know that at any moment you were in for a world of pain.
