Would be interested in a 335d touring- they seem the right blend of everything. Most seem to have done quite a bit over 100k miles. With modern diesels being so complicated, would it be a good idea to go for one? I imagine the 335i is a better bet reliability wise but I'd rather, cough cough, the diesel for my use.

In the "unreliability" and complication stakes, there's not much in it. In fact, the 335i is probably worse. Wouldn't shy away from high miles if provenance is good. Overall condition is key. Both are great cars. Only downer is that 335d is auto only.

My 335i petrol coupe (2006) is now on 180,000 miles and runs fine (original components other than regular servicing,) still on it's original clutch and original turbo's. Lovely smooth quick performance.

Dont think they are too bad reliability wise but if it does go wrong it will be a wallet caning of biblical proportions, a turbo diesel, six cylinder, common rail, twin turbo's, injectors, DPF. It is a perfect storm of potential financial ruin, they will be getting into the hands of the fastest/cheapest/remap/mpg brigade now, buy wisely and it will be a lovely car, buy the wrong one and could be painful.

Is this one notorious for "swirl flaps" disintegrating?

I have just bought a 56 plate with 74000 miles on. It drives every bit as good as the one I test drove at the dealer which had half the miles on, was twice the price and only 2 years old. Very impressed with it as my new family car.

My budget is £15k. The 3.0tdi's of that age are thirstier and from what I've seen not as quick? Saying that it's hardly a deal breaker on UK roads... Quattro is a bonus though!

The 335d is just more tempting though- and relatively cheap! As said, it's just the high miles.

I'd like to try both as the 335i is very good too and clearly you can modify both. Both are plenty fast enough

From your I post it would appear you may be at the top of your budget by looking at high miler 335i and d's. From what I recall there aren't many tiurings out there with these lumps and from what I saw most had horrible interiors limiting choice.
I optd for the 330d touring as there were loads too choose from with decent mileage which meant I could be picky and find the right one that wouldn't ruin me financially. Have you looked at these or test drove any of these yet as the 330d had plenty of oomph to a degree and you could alway remap the right one .

Most tourists 335's at private purchase not co car the co cars are 318/316/320 and vastly fewer 325/330ds. There are not many places where you can opt into a 335d touring as a co car and it's expensive hence the 330d in co2 tax makes a lot of sense.

You are right- £15k is a bit meagre- but I have found a handful for that price. £15k is not including any haggling so could perhaps up the budget to £16k I guess. 330d in everyday driving is probably nearly as good I would imagine, and yes, more choice!
