I was at SIlverstone way back when the 956 made its debut. I have photo's of the Rothamns cars in the pits & clearly remember thinking that this was a classic in the making. I cannot remember another race car giving me the same feeling, not even the Jaguar XJR Le Mans cars which I absolutely adore. Just a teeny weeny bit jealous of Mr H right now......

On the progress front it really is a double edged sword. Something like the 962 (or at the extreme of the drama scale the 787b) has so much occasion however for it's purpose of going fast the modern cars are in a different league.
A quick look at Wiki has the 962 race record at 3:23.3 (239.551 km/h) from '86, which I would assume is minus chicanes but the R15 in 2010 did 3:19.074 (246.463 km/h) including the chicanes.

The Schuppan 962CR - achingly beautiful, and no doubt a truly terrifying drive. Thanks for that, I had no idea this existed. http://www.flat4.co.jp/cars/forsale/00vern.html

Mmmmm lovely car Just don't let a detailer near it as they would remove any signs of the car having ever done anything leeson660 said: BERGS2 said: And we call this progress In the world where the stopwatch is king it is progress.

Love the car.
The modern vid looks like it's top speed is about 1/3rd of the 956. Progress, pah!
All racing drivers know the risks they take and the ultimate penalty, they should be allowed to decide what they want to race, not some boring H&S bod sitting next to the accountant.

The later WSC spec 962s ran bigger turbos and intercoolers with alot more boost. They also ran 3.2 and 3.4 litre. A 1987 car would be air cooled liners with seperate water cooled heads at 1.2 bar. In the later cars the cylinder and head are one piece and water cooled.

Engine not opened since 1987 !
How many race engines used in top level competition could claim that?
Porsche engineering at its best.

You can see the front wheels, they're magnesium BBS cross-spokes. The rear wheels have a white cover on them which works to pull air through them, like the early E34 M5 or Formula 1 cars from a few years ago.

That is a fantastic fact about the engine, and just to echo everyone else - what an awesome car to have driven (albeit at merely a fraction of its capabilities)
