So Damon said he was misquoted when asked about this during the F1 yesterday. Well, clearly I am one of the few who was not surprised. Some of you? Not so much.

Did he? Do you have any corroboration for that, or do we need to take your word for it? wink

I only heard about it via Gaz on the F1 thread. No reason to think that Gaz is a liar, so his word is good enough for me.

Class. I agree with him though. Or at least bhp should be linked to actual driver ability.
What is the connection, on the road and especially on a Motorway, between bhp and 'ability'?

BHP and attitude is probably far more relevant. Indeed maybe just attitude.

All irrelevant anyway. As soon as the 'Information Systems' have cluttered up every mile of every motorway and what used to be known as the 'hard shoulder' has become the 4th lane (or whatever count is appropriate for the stretch), it will mostly not matter what the theoretical maximum limit may be as allowed by law. More likely that there will be constant speed control in operation based on whatever parameters are deemed politically suitable at the time.

No problem so long as you don't wish to make a day trip to family (say) 2 hours away but find that at a lower limit it takes 3 hours thus making the day more about travelling than being with family.

Oh well, there's always Skype I suppose.

Hill quoted in a report said:
.
Hill continued: “Honestly, the speed limit going up to 80mph makes me shudder. Mostly people drive too fast, too close to the car in front, and they think they know what they’re doing, but they don’t.

“What happens when people drive on the roads is that they don’t concentrate, they just think about something else. So they’re relying on their unconscious to respond to things. That’s why it’s better to drive at a sensible pace.”
.
Those are salient points in my opinion based on modern traffic conditions and driving habits. Consider this; 99.9999% of the time most drivers are safe driving at speed. It is that 0.0001% when they, and here I suspect this applies to ALL road users at some time during their use of roads, including myself, that catches folks out when they are NOT safe at over say that arbitrary 55mph.

Of course, I cannot provide any statistics to support this. So, what convinces me that this is the case? Actually, I have the best evidence available, that of my own eyes and ears when out and about.

If you have never seen such evidence, may I suggest that you take vigorous and effective measures to ensure proper observation at all times when on the roads. Then, god forbid, you will not be one of the millions of drivers who when completing their accident report form answer the question, what or who was to blame for the accident usually respond with something feeble like :~

Millions of accident report forms said:
.
I did not see the other vehicle.
.
Sadly, some will not be able to complete that report form ... ever!

Again I have first class evidence. For my sins, many moons ago I was employed in the Claims Department of the then UK's largest Motor Insurers.

I look at it this way - if someone isn't safe at 80 miles per hour, they'll hardly be a 'safe' driver at 70, or even 55... And the real idiots that aren't deterred by the current limit (or a higher one) will hardly turn into a model of compliance when the limit is lowered.
