I suspect the auto is the only box offered for both torque and marketing reasons. C ETA did some web research and found that the manual box from the 330d is rated to 530nm, the auto box fitted to both the 330d and 335d is rated to 600nm, or 650nm in post-LCI E90s. (The gearbox takes on a postfix of -TU for technical update, as many BMW things do. Both of these boxes are from BMW and ZF. For those bothered to go looking, the gearboxes are: Auto: ga6hp26z (and ga6hp26z-tu) Manual: gs653dz

640d :-) Not 60+k that's for sure More like 25k And, strangely compelling though a 640d is, it is auto only. Great 10k car in 5 years though

530nm is 390lbft, 335d in stock form belches out 425, a remap will give it 500-525lbft. I was sceptical, thought it was marketing rather than technical, but maybe not.

We were after a 123D Coupe but put off by the limited amount for sale with decent spec at sensible money, and with a baby on way its not practicle enough. After looking around I went for a 335D Touring. Ive never had an auto, and am still not used to it. I dont think the auto box is able to make best use of that power. That said, it doesnt feel as fast as it is, its smooth, well built, and for a car with this performance suprisingly cheap to run. The Evolve Switchbox makes it even better

Chris I'd quite like one - although they're only a tiny bit more powerful than my 123d. And, I'd need to import one, I'm in New Zealand.

Because he's the be all and end all for petrolheads, isn't he? Slightly out of the box OP, what're your thoughts on 4x4s? You should be able to get an old ute or truck that'll be a bit of a hoot to drive.

I know, I drove the south island when I was over in December. Most of the roads between towns are built dead straight?
