Ariel had a square four engine (And I belive a rare honda?) Designed by Edward Turner I believe, who is also responsible for the Triumph speed twin and subsequent Bonneville variants.

As said, there are Radial engined planes but also Rotary, as in it looks like a radial, but the cylinders rotate round a fixed crankshaft.

BMW should get a mention for the original K-engines. Straight 3 (and later 4) cylinder, mounted longitudinally in the bike, "on its side".

There is a rotary engined mazda bus in a collection somewhere.

Thrust SSC has two big jet engines
Thrust 2 has one jet engine
Bloodhound has a jet and rocket combination engine

Some range extender engines are 2 parallel cylinders on their side.

Some ships have up to 14-cylinder 2 stroke diesels

7,603,850 newton metres (5,608,310 lbf·ft) @ 102 rpm. Who said 2-strokes didn't have any torque!

EDIT: I also don't know of any planes with a rotary, though I'm sure someone made one somewhere. If you're thinking of the old circular engines popular on biplanes, Focke Wulfs and American WW2 planes, they were radials.
A lot of the very old aero engines were in fact "Rotaries" in the original meaning of the word. These were not wankel engines which people often refer to as rotary (but is NOT a true rotary), but rather a radial style engine where the crank was stationary and the cylinders and crankcase rotated around the crank.

According to some VWists the VR6 engine is neither a V6 or an inline engine but something entirely new (apart from the bits just like the Alfa V4) and better than both.

Although it's a V6, clearly.

How many V4 engines do you know of with 2 rods, 2 plugs, and 8 valves, per cylinder?

I've seen pictures of the 4 rotor engine, but I can't remember what it was in, and aerodrones use singles.

Mazda 787 was a 4 rotor. :selfbelm:

Good call, still technically a V4 but the oval pistons make it worthy of its own slot IMHO smile

It's a V4, according to Honda and the FIM.

This is what Honda does when someone says they can't have a V8. They go mental and create something insane.

Straight 6 is very common in bus/truck applications, Volvo have some knocking out up to 750hp.

Also, Pontiac, Oldsmobile and a few Italian marques used straight 8s in the past - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straight-eight_engine

Absolutely, but I wouldn't call it "common"
