My dad has an Air con machine in his workshop for cars that are crashed and repaired.

Mine needed re-gassing so he did it for me. Cost me nothing.

If you're in London or the Home Counties, I can heartily recommend WeGasAnyCar. 50 gets you a smart, friendly guy who will turn up to your house on time and do a great job of regassing and diagnosing any issues.
Thanks. However, I'm in Lincolnshire (near Spalding).

Couldn't get the code to work but still booked it in for today. Considering it's a 14 year old 190,000 miles car I thought that getting it working was about as likely as The Sun hiring a journalist, but it is now blowing ice cold and they told me there were no leaks. Will probably turn out there is one and it will last until the first day of a heatwave, but I should add that in breaking with PH lore they didn't try and tell me my brakes were shot and the exhaust is leaking (which it is) but could be fixed for £500.

Just had AC regassed at Kwikfit; it was down but only by a bit... and despite there being an improvement after they'd done it; the improvement was only small and they wouldn't take my money!

My ice cold air con lasted for about 2 weeks. Perhaps I could have gone back but I was bored of the car anyway so sold it and bought something where the air con already worked

Just been on halfords website and the aircon refill can is £34.99 plus £19.99 for the fill adapter.

Think I'd prefer to go to kwik fit where at least if I give it a go and it fails I wouldn't be £55 out of pocket. My 306's aircon hasn't worked since I got it in 2011. Just don't want to throw money on it, but very tempting as I'm baking in the car.

anyone tried the halfords one using a trade card? Price??

I was in our local halfords auto centre yesterday and asked about this cos I just bought a mk6 fiesta which has non-working aircon ..... but the engine is also on its way out so I don't want to spend loads on it.
Explained this to The manager and he reckons they pressure test it first and if it won't hold pressure they won't gas it and you don't have to pay. Seemed like a win-win to me?
MOT is due in August so it'll be booked in there for both things (they're doing MOT half price too).

Got my old corsa done by KF, lasted 3 weeks. They wouldn't refund as it was OK at the time it was gassed, and said there must be a leak.

Got it redone by cool cars of Basingstoke, who leak tested it and found no leak. Re gassed it and 6 months in still works perfectly.

I only went to KF as they did it free if it didn't work. Otherwise I would not go near the place even with my stty old car. Never again. They can even manage to fk something up that a machine does for them rolleyes
May of leaked from the high ans low pressure ports which doesn't show while the kit is connected.

If you can get them to fill the system with refrigerant with UV trace it means if you have a leak it sprays the UV at the leak and is easier to see the fault
As I said, cool cars of Basingstoke leak tested it, none found. They regassed it properly and it is fine.

KF fked it up somehow. I don't care how, but once again I am proved right that they are totall useless.
you are so right, your single negative experience against the half dozen or so positive ones in this thread proves you absolutely right. Doesn't it?

My £0.02

Forget the places that use fluorescent dye.
Find a place that has a sniffer.

I had a slow leak that the dye didn't find. They have 4 attempts.
The guy that had the gas sniffer found the leak in 8 seconds. Pinpointed it to within 2cm.

I can add another negative experience I'm afraid!

Similar story - KF regas lasted a few weeks, after which it dropped off quickly. This was back in summer 2012 - it just about got to September.

I left it till the next summer - my mate has the Halfords kit and so we bought a can and gassed it up. It lasted till I chopped it in March.

Personally, I will be wary of using KF again.

I took the 2004 Passat to Halfords for a £30 regas on Saturday. It has progressively got worse over the 4 years I had it. Simple regas I thought

By the time I visited the third halfords I finally found someone "qualified" to perform the task. I took him 10 mins to locate the port but once he had his machine told him the gas was full.

Found this a bit odd, but he suspects a leak so said he could try to fill it but would likely to be to little avail. I declined and continue to have a sweaty back.

Yesterday I was fed up of having the climate control on auto and pumping out hot air. So switched the system off and MPG has risen noticeably. Who needs air con...

Extra MPG is one big bonus of no aircon. smile

Mine has been so much better over the last few months that it has been dead.

I am using my wife's car loads at the moment - simply because her air con is ice cold and my Jaguar S-type not only has a problem with the AC not working, but the climate control only wants to blow ambient (hot) air, irrelevant of what temperature setting i have it set too - Apart from when i accelerate hard, then it blows 'extra hot' air into the cabin!! Grrhhhh.
