detomaso said: The C43 gearbox is rated to 580nm (427bhp) but I think the concensus is that a lot have been driven hard and suffered. A gearbox oil change can compound the issue by freeing up debris; there are many reports of the gearbox going south within 1,000 miles of a change. There's also a seal on the gearbox which perishes allowing oil to seep from the gearbox and wick up the wires to the gearbox ECU in the footwell (though this is not just a C43 issue). If you spot oil weeping from this area it's only a £10 part from MB. Violent upchanges are normally due to a MAF sensor on its way out and not gearbox related.
I read a lot about C43s as it's 'on my list' as a replacement for the 540i when that gives up the ghost... I wonder if it's a bit of a lottery depending on early ownership, i.e. getting thrashed from cold, no fluid changes. Mine's on 93k and (touches wood) the gearbox is fine. A fluid change maybe 10-15k ago, which when recently checked by my garage they said the fluid looks clean and 'perfect'. The gearbox had no problem delivering enough grunt to match E46 M3s on the straights of Bedford.

Jensen certainly doesn't look dear but really does depend on how solid the ol' girl is. Would be nice with some slim chrome bumpers, slightly wider period wheels and a fruity exhaust though.

The gearbox had no problem delivering enough grunt to match E46 M3s on the straights of Bedford. You're probably right. I wonder if some of these failures are also due to driving them with the oil being below the correct level; I've read a few posts on chaps getting their fluid changed at the dealer and it being 1/2 a litre below the mark when they've checked it after having a few shifting issues, only for those issues to disappear with a top up.

Sports seats on an SE are always nice though. Yes, look nice enough, no mention of s/h, but if it has a complete record and looks as good as the pic's suggest then a few £00 off and looks good. Exactly my thoughts. Good SH and in flesh - very good at £12-1300. And Nick - all the better IMO for the smaller rims. DKR Aston is great just because but its sat there because well you wouldn't really unless you had to. As for the 172, think we've had it before. Must be a bit of a riot on track - still need to get myself down to a day/evening! Otherwise its still only 11am.

At 40K the premium on that SZ is less than I'd have expected tbh. You could afford to add a less pampered one to actually drive.
