The E38 740 was a hound frown
"Hound" is perhaps a tad harsh. It's a once £50k motor for under £3k and with 100k+ miles under its wheels. It's not going to be box-fresh is it?

  • Needs new rear light clusters. The "jewel" ones all seem to fade and crack a little bit with time. Not hard or dear to sort.
  • Needs all four wheels refurbishing. Par for the course. Again, cheap and easy enough to sort.
  • Window surround rubbers perished. They all do that, it's not a water seal, it's for sound-deadening. Easy to live with or even change.
  • Oil leak from rocker cover - it's an M62. They all do it. Again, DIYable for not very much money.
  • No accompanying invoices to the stamped book - that's the norm, it's very rare to see all the accompanying paperwork.
  • The 35k of unstamped history I will concede is the one thing that gives cause for concern, but if present condition is otherwise good...
You could throw £1k at sorting all of the above and changing the gearbox fluid and you'd end up with a car the equal of anything GMS or U7 would sell you for £5-6k.

If you want a genuinely mint one, be prepared to pay a significant premium for it accordingly. wink
Maybe not 'hound' but it's priced at the higher end of the market, it's just tatty round the edges and certainly didn't have the 'wow' factor I expected

Correct, 'sunflowers' are called Styling 39 M-Doppelspeiche II in BMW speak.
Just to confuse you (and myself) I meant the earlier sunflowerish ones, style 22. They were referred to as M-Double Spoke, but so were the style 24s; the later sunflowers (style 39) weren't ever fitted to the E36 M3 3.0 were they?

I knew what you meant Simon smile

That's why I specified the 'staggered' bit, there's always some oddities but yes you're right on that I think. The 22s were specced as a '5' set from new as you got a full size spare
By the way, on the Style 24s I believe the extra cost of the wider rears wasn't just the extra 1" each side ( tyres were same), upgrade to forged all round - hence the near £1k cost

It's not though, it's the cheapest 740i Sport currently available, so isn't going to be the best one. Indeed it was posted as it was posted as a challenge to find a 740i Sport for under £3k, so there evidently aren't reams of them available at the price.

2001 Y with 100k miles for £3,475

2001 Y with 71k miles for £5,250

GMS car at twice the price: 2001 Y with 75k miles for £5,995

Double the price, but I'll bet it's not double the car of that silver one at half the price. £3k in your back pocket is plenty enough incentive for me to sort the niggles at my own leisure...

2 thoughts for the day.

The 355 is now my favourite obtainable donkey.

More stickers are coming for the Porsche.

I guess I wasn't taking into account the 'sport' premium. I need to re-think and up my budget I think!

Not great pics, but it looks a decent spec. £13k seems a lot for an M3 with nearly 90k miles - CS notwithstanding, does it not?

Mind you: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/4099034.htm

I'll never stop wondering at the sort of buyer that buys such a car new, then does an average of ~300 miles per year in it.

You'd have to possess a level of love for the E46 that goes beyond all rational sense surely to buy one over for instance:

Both £36k.

Today, so far:

A trip to North London to view my old E28, thinking it might shortcut some of the project I'd intended to do with the red 518i - it won't. Rusty underneath, rusty on top. It's about 5 different shades of green now, and the interior is looking tired.

The auction finishes at 9pm tonight, and I'm not the current highest bidder. I don't intend to bid again either, but we'll see what happens after a few drinks tonight...

I noticed the last service invoice for the Audi mentions that the cam cover gaskets are weeping - the wisps of smoke from the bonnet confirm that they've not yet been remedied, so £28 in parts to collect on Tuesday and I'll sort that out. Otherwise thoroughly impressed with it still.

Lastly, this was being driven around Berko today:

Brand new MP4 Spider. As I heard it approach I thought it sounded a bit rough, then realised it was being drowned out by a 1.0 Micra with a drainpipe exhaust following behind. I'm assuming it's a customer car given it still has the seat covers and delivery film on it...

I understand the white e46 and the blue rs4 have come from the same PO.

I'll be willing to stake a lot that this one is one of the best out there, even as a pricey pre-facelift: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/4052434.htm

The same £9k it was marketed for in June 2009 with 20k miles fewer. That said, it had been kept as a new car with FBMWSH up to that point and wanted for nothing, either mechanically or cosmetically.

As was is June 2009:

The gearknob's been changed too, for the better all leather one. The brushed aluminium has been swapped for piano black trim too by the look of it.
