I also had a decent run in the 4star Golf. A very, very nice car. Lovely and tight to drive - not a knock, clunk or rattle to be heard. And the 8v engine is a peach - lovely and torquey from low revs and keeps pulling to the redline. And it's not so prestine that I'd feel guilty about leaving it outside or using it everyday over winter.

Currently on holiday here in Mauritius:  Its after dinner, dusk, and I'm surrounded by palm trees browsing on my laptop smoking a Romeo y Julieta whilst considering car options: I have around 8k to spend on a daily driver for approximately 11,000 per year. My shortlist thus far is as follows - E39 530/540 - Focus RS Mk1 - E38 740 - E90 saloon Cheaper options: - Focus ST170 - Puma - Some tdi golfalike I'm wanting to keep my little Alfa long term which requires perhaps 4k in the next few years to get it to where I want it, so am looking for a good daily that won't require too much upkeep whilst being moderately interesting. Currently I drive the works Zafira td which is actually ok as a daily and lugging stuff to and fro, but a bit meh. Anyone have suggestions and/or experience of the Focus RS?
