I'm inheriting the family Micra, and will be using it for a minimum of a year. This will be a welcome but boring stop-gap. So as an effort to keep my brain ticking i feel lke getting myself a rough classic, and spending a year restoring it. The only criteria for this are sub £1500, no welding needed, and the ability to seat 4, also no huge engines as insurance is a bugger for me A boot would be lovely, as i do alot of climbing and shoving gear for 4 in it would be a bonus, however it's not necessary? fictional internet beer tokens will be available to the poster of the suggestion deemed most lovely Edited because my brain is already dying and spelling is difficult, and again because i forgot that big engines cost me a ton. So I've now been convinced that welding may be the way to go, just nothing that will fall apart with a light breeze

I do like that Merc.
I do sometimes wonder why we spend so much money on cars when you can cruise around in something like that for less than £1k.

Mk2 Golf GTIs are relatively easy to work on and fit into your budget.

You're cutting out a lot of possibilities by saying 'no welding', and I think that anything that can be classed as a classic at that price is likely to need a patch or two.
How about taking a couple of hundred out of your budget for a welder?

How about taking a couple of hundred out of your budget for a welder? would it be worth investing in my own torch, or is welding difficult to pick up? I'm generally good at most mechanical work and electrical work, and can pick up disciplines very quickly, however I've never even touched a welder, never mind used one :S
