RE: SOTW: Jaguar XJ6 LWB
Discussion
What a top SOTW - one of the best in ages.
How classy and elegant does that look, even today?
I LOVE THEM! Had several Jags over the last few years, including a Series 3 XJ 4.2 Sovereign, XJ40 3.2S, X300 3.2 Sport, Daimler XJ40 3.6, X308 3.2 V8 Executive, X300 XJR Supercharged, and have now got a 2000 model X308 4.0 V8 Supercharged.
I think nothing wafts quite like a Jag. HAS to be an XJ - not of the S Type and X Type 'mini' Jags!
I think that everyone should own a Jag XJ at some point during their life - they will always remember it.
Ok, some of the XJ40 and X300s do tend to suffer from rust, and have a few niggly issues. But, mechanically, I have always found mine to be bullet proof. The AJ6 / AJ16 in 3.2 and 4.0 litre guise are some of the best engines Jaguar have ever built. The X308s can be tempremental, but keep on top of things and buy a good one, they are still reliable everyday cars.
My favourite interiors of them all are those in the X300 XJR / Sport models, finished on off-white with the black wood trim. I'm not as keen on the X308 interiors, as they don't feel as 'solid and have too many reminders of Ford in there.
The main issue is that they like a drink, and running one for a longer daily commute can be quite expensive. Still, for less than a grand, you can buy a good looking car that looks at home parked in the most exlusive areas on London.
Someone please buy it! A pretty rare car in solid black and LWB, offer the guy £800 and enjoy the world of XJ wafting. Give yourself the 'Jag bug'!

Nice jag, looking for a barge for a long commute at the mo, would I be mad getting an 3.2XJ over a saab 9-5 aero?
No - they're two totally different cars. Yes, the Saab will no doubt be quicker, and likely to be better put-together.But, the Jag will turn more heads and give you a satisfying grin everytime you jump in and drive it!

Worth buying to run for a few months just to say you've owned one.
Indeed! Everyone on here should try one!I had an X300 3.2 XJ Sport about 12 years ago and always hankered after another.
So, 2 years ago, I bought the Sovereign lwb for the Le Mans Classic. It was a mint 2 owner car, apart from the chrome on the chrome on the back bumper was a bit dented.
So, using my best man maths,, I worked out it would be better to buy an X300 3.2 XJ Sport manual that had a good bit of chrome on it.
That was a great car - the manual car transforms it into something completely different. The sports exhaust sounded great! Now sadly RIP.
Then, at Christmas, I saw an XJR6 for sale locally. I couldn't not buy it!
Then, in April, my boss was selling her XJR V8. Again, I couldn't not buy it.
Fantastic fun!

Been humming and harring for six months .looked at loads on the net.
my heart.current daily is going to fail its test next month so maybe then .
Never buy sheds when you NEED a car - worst mistake possible.my heart.current daily is going to fail its test next month so maybe then .
You know it will need work - you know the potential for explosive bork is there - it's NOT a car you want to be relying on.
Now is the time to get a car and get it sorted - before your current car goes pop - you do not want to find yourself caught between a dead shed which needs potentially pricey work (which will be cheaper if you shop around) and the need to get to work tomorrow.

I loved my old X308 4.0 Sovereign, it was one of the most enjoyable motoring experiences I've ever had, but also the most expensive 2 months I've ever ever had with a car. Do your homework on cheap Jags, when they bite & go wrong, they bite very very hard
...I still want another, even thought it financially raped me
I currently own a 1995 xj 3.2 sport and a 1997 6 cylinder xjr , the comments on the speed of the 3.2 are not accurate , these pick up there heels and fly when asked with a 0-60mph time of 7.9 seconds, and let me tell you they are fantastic to drive, I have owned the xj sport for 9 years, and it has been faultless, handles beautifully and makes me smile every time I drive it!, the XJR is simply ballistic , very very quick...but the xj sport is better to drive!.. you should own one of these cars, I drive a lot of miles for business and have driven, Audi, BMW, Mercedes and the 1995 Jaguar is better to drive than a 2010 Mercedes ... They are smooth, comfortable and even the XJR returns 25 mpg on motorway runs, you can get over 30 in the xj sport...one other fact the 3.2 , 6 cylinder engine is the same as used in the Aston Martin DB7!, as for life expectancy of these engines...think in the region of 500k.....!, they are simply fantastic machines to drive and own!,

7.9 is for the manual. It's 8.9 for the auto (or 9.4 to 62mph). That's still not bad for nigh-on two tonnes.rex47 said:

Although Aston added a supercharger.Recently sold my 2004 X350 XJ8 4.2, my first Jag. Black with black and £18k of extras to include adaptive cruise. Car had all the tech of a contemporary S class, but gorgeous looks and a stunning drive to boot. Was actually fun around the twisties and, I kid you not, averaged 32mpg overall in my 20k ownership which was town/motorway/B road mixed.
One of my all time favourites and will definitely not be my last Jag.
