RE: PH Carpool: Hawk Stratos
Discussion
This is without doubt the best stratos replica to come up for sale within the last 3 years. They don't come up for sale that often and this car has all the right bits and you can see it's been lovingly put together. I nearly bought a Hawk around 2 years ago but changed my mind at the last moment and decided to build a GT40 replica instead. I've got massive respect for anyone that can take on the challenge of building a car like this and see it through. Whoever gets this car will be very lucky.
Found some more pics of the car here:

Does look good, loving your 40 more though, you have put me in two minds wether to go with black paneling like you have or not? Not sure I trust myself not to scratch it when re-assembling Found some more pics of the car here:

Wow. Wow. Wow.
If I had to be picky, and it's just my humble opinion, I would have considered a different V6, perhaps the Ford 3.0 from the Mondeo/Jag. As sonorous as the Alfa lump is, I just don't think I could trust it. Probablies completely unfounded, but there you go.
Still, lovely lovely car.

Haven't made my mind up, oh well, I'll wait until I have my panelling finished.
No this isn't Blib's car....it's mine.
Thanks for the great comments, glad you like the car. Just thought I would answer a few points raised in the comments.
Build one for £15k....I wish. May be 20 years ago, but as the Hawk kit after VAT is about £14k plus and that's without engine, radiator, wheels, tyres, paint and on and on....those £15k days are long gone.
How does it drive and handle...I think fantastic. Huge soft tyres grip the road great. Some say it is better still with the anti-roll bars, but I haven't detected any roll or felt the need for any stiffening. A 3L V6 in the back of such a light car you would expect it go pretty well.
Some chit chat about age related plates. Unfortunately due to IVA/VOSA regulations, you have to have it plated in line with key items used from the donor, In my case a 1989 Alfa 164. Only way around it would to build it with key bits from a mid-1970's car, get it approved and then rip it apart again. No doubt some of you know ways around the rule book, but I didn't and it wasn't important to me.
Is the Stratos going to be harder to build due to parts. Possibly. There are people out there making and selling bits, but they ain't cheap. A set of 4 over-centre catches for the body work are about £200 last time I looked.
No my car isn't an authentic replica, I note the old LHD issue raising its head again. Again, wasn't an issue to me and if you know your Strats there are plenty of other give aways. Plenty of chaps have built fantastic near-as-damn it replicas. I just wanted to build one which had my stamp on it and I knew would pass the IVA test without too many hassles (still had a few though)
Few of you wanted interior and engine pictures I have attached some for your viewing
Thanks for your comments again

Superb build, and a really dainty car, they are small and I would think getting in/out plus a small cabin equals a bit of a squeeze and a modest mileage would generate cramps perhaps.
The work load/spend reminds me of getting my E Type fhc into a real car and not the heap of "restored crap" it started off as.

Same as. It's been suggested to me though to go for a wrinkle/crinkle powder coat which masks minor mistakes and scratches.

Decisions decisions, and I haven't even started yet Haven't made my mind up, oh well, I'll wait until I have my panelling finished.
My current overspend is I've abandoned my initial plan of using the original ECU, manifold and ignition system in place of ITB's, COP and an aftermarket ECU. It adds at least (and I do mean at the very very least) 1k if I do all the fabrication work myself.

It is *so* easy to get carried away, it's also all well and good to say you can build one for say 20k but then feature creep comes in and before you know it that has creeped to 25-30-35k... You have to be *dedicated* and realistic in the first place to stick to your original budget. I went the other way and figuring any amount I selected would be nothing more than an estimate decided not to set an overall budget but rather set a monthly spend.

I'm going the same route with an initial lump sum to get me a rolling chassis and the circa £400 pm to continue with, it's not gonna be quick but I'll get the in the end...My current overspend is I've abandoned my initial plan of using the original ECU, manifold and ignition system in place of ITB's, COP and an aftermarket ECU. Excuse my ignorance but what is COP I saw someone mentioned it on one of your threads the other day and it had me wondering
Have you ordered yours yet?
Yep that's pretty much my plan, currently spent about 9-10k, plan on spending ~£100/m for the next 9 months until my wife is off maternity leave and I can ramp it up. Have plenty of work I can do though so the lack of spend won't be too bad (although obviously I'd progress quicker with more money).
COP is Coil-On-Plug, there are a number of advantages, although I won't be able to realise some of them. The main one that I will though is that no distributor is required.
Downside is you need 8 coil drivers (you can do wasted spark with less though). Along with wanting to do full sequential injection means the least I can get away as an ECU is with a MS3+MS3X

Insane. A Ford or Jag lump over an Italian V6? Put your straightjacket on please sir!;)If I had to be picky, and it's just my humble opinion, I would have considered a different V6, perhaps the Ford 3.0 from the Mondeo/Jag.
