Have you ordered yours yet?

Yep that's pretty much my plan, currently spent about 9-10k, plan on spending ~£100/m for the next 9 months until my wife is off maternity leave and I can ramp it up. smile Have plenty of work I can do though so the lack of spend won't be too bad (although obviously I'd progress quicker with more money).

COP is Coil-On-Plug, there are a number of advantages, although I won't be able to realise some of them. The main one that I will though is that no distributor is required.

Downside is you need 8 coil drivers (you can do wasted spark with less though). Along with wanting to do full sequential injection means the least I can get away as an ECU is with a MS3+MS3X

Ahh that explains a lot thanks. What were you reasons for going with the Toyota engine over a SBF? It must add a degree of complication to your build?

Not yet ordered but been speaking with Mick at SouthernGT and intend to order around Christmas time to get cracking come spring, I expect the rolling chassis to take me at least a year possibly significantly more rolleyes as I'm in the same boat as you with wife currently on maternity leave (2 months left) and obviously spending time with the wife and kids being a major thing that all though great will slow the build down.

Yeah it does add some complexity, if I was in the US it would be SBF everytime but the 1UZ is cheaper here, although that was when I was hoping to use the original ECU... frown

Also I don't like pushrods. I wanted a modern DOHC 4v/cyl engine, so it was a choice between the Audi V8, BMW M60/M62 or 1UZ-FE, the Audi and BMW looked even trickier to fit, required even more electrics and were even harder to tune. I'm after about 300hp but should I get bored I will twin turbo it. smile

Yeah, family comes first, that's also why progress isn't as fast as it could be. I'd rather spend my weekend with my wife and little ones than work on the car. If nothing else a divorce really puts a dampener on the finances so have to keep the wife happy! wink

Currently I'm spending a couple of hours a night on it, slow work but getting there. When my little man gets a bit older and can be in the garage without 200% concentration on what he's doing I may get a bit more done. smile

Not mine. But one of the very best cars around. A steal at that price. I don't remember telling you that a car could be built for £15. The kit from Hawk costs about that. There's a helluva lot more to go into the car before it's finished.

Great job on the build, it looks (and doubtless sounds) fabulous! However having seen Clarkson squeezing in and struggling to drive it (very SWB, silly small cockpit, duff brakes, crazy steering) I concluded you would have to be a tiny rally driving guru to unleash even a road 3 litre version of it. Maybe that's what explains the 1000 mile total?
Do. Not. Go. There. With. Clarkson. And. That. Episode!!!!!!!!!

Yeah. But, not brave enough to try the driver's seat! Actually, had you'd done so, youd still be stuck in there.

All joking aside, Ian's car is head and shoulders above mine. I've got a lot of work to do on mine to get near to the incredible standard that Ian has achieved.

In my opinion, his car is a veritable work of art. A testament to Ian's craftsmanship and attention to detail.

Awesome.

laugh Ha ha! A fake car, with a fake sponsor's livery laugh to make it look like a fake racing car laugh and it's no good, so the builder wants to sell it so that he can have another go at building another fake car laugh

roflroflroflroflroflrofl

Why would anyone pay thirty four grand for that?? laugh

You could easily find a good, interesting car for thirty grand and still have four thousand left for repairs and maintenance yes Just have a look in the classifieds.

I certainly wouldn't buy any car from a dealer that sells this sort of thing nono

Yeah the Thema (Ferrari) v8 will fit. I went to see a hawk for sale with one fitted. It looked like a hell of a squeeze though

Fake or not its bloody gorgeous.
Good build.
While fake is a justified monika, it does not do justice to one of these cars. A Hawk with a alfa V6 is a close replica.

I have one of these on my retirement build plan.

The Topgear car was slated unfairly as the car was supplied unfinished as I recall.

Looks fantastic! Really nicely done.

But have you looked into getting a Dino engine? I would have thought the Alfa unit would be a little too refined for a car like this...

Getting hold of a Dino engine with the required gearbox would cost a small fortune.
You could easily have £15k just in the engine and box alone.
A 308/Mondial engine and box would be more affordable, but still way more expensive than an Alfa V6.
You can now buy a Stratos kit that uses most of the running gear from a Mondial.

One or two replicas have been built with Dino engines, but two of those cars have been converted back to run a cheaper engine.
One of those two cars has already been mentioned here - the one with the Thema V8 (red Hawk with gold wheels)

I think I Must have done that thing where someone tells me the price of a car and then I mentally deduct £100 per day from the car until in my head I can afford it. You told me the price ages ago too, so I have been deducting for quite some time. smile

On another note, why is Gozza's 50% heavier than yours?
Are they built on different chassis or is it the components needed for 500 bhp?

Do we think good Stratos replicas (like this one) will one day be worth a decent chunk off cash? Well screwed together 250 GTO reps (http://www.pistonheads.com/doc.asp?c=52&i=24588) aren't cheap.
I think very difficult to compare a GTO replica based on a classic Ferrari (250 GTE) that was related in any case to the GTO with all Ferrari parts to a Stratos kit car replica.

So no, don't think kit car replicas going to be worth much. Not sure that is the point of such cars though.
Some of the better kits do command good money. Cobra's GT40's etc. Its dependant on the quality of the kit, and more importantly the faithfulness of replication (right number of pistons etc). Hawk (Kirkham) cobra's in particular are fantastic and have been used by shelby to build "real" cobra's. Ford have even comissioned Kirkham builds.

I don't like bolt on's or looky likey kits at all, but a well executed race car kit/replica is perfectly acceptable in my book, and prices reflect that. Look as SH cobra and GT40 prices, they have been very strong for years. Stratos repica's are quite rare, so they are going to be pricy.

My mind is inventing facts about the Hawk today. I dont know why.

AH, I know what has happened.
Because I thought it was your car at first and read the 750 kg weight in the article. Its actually Gozzes.
I then read one of the links here to someone trying to get a 500bhp engine for a hawk. I read that thread and the hawk in there was aiming for 1150kg kerb wieght which is a huge uplift on Gozzes so I wondered where the difference was.
