I remember being 16 and putting 50p in my 'ped just so I could go for a little ride. I was absolutely skint back then, all my money went on buying the worlds most unreliable Italian 50cc "sports moped", insuring, MOTing and taxing it, then I was constantly replacing pistons / reboring it because the noisy pipe made it run lean. So if I managed to have any spare cash I'd put some fuel in it just to go for a ride. Petrol was just hitting £2.00 a gallon so I guess I was putting in just over a litre, that would get me to my girlfriends house and back- more than enough for me!

TBF, I left school at 16 and my mother got me a 7 year old moped as a gift. I had a job lined up but it wasnt until the september, so I had a whole summer to kill. This involved doing about 70 miles a day on a moped aimlessly with several friends. I often use to put £2 in or less, as any spare change I could get hold of went on this. I never once had an issue with the minimum 2 litre spend either.

My 125 does around 100 miles on £6-7, so depending on what it was, he could have maybe got 30ish miles out of it, maybe he only did a couple of miles a day.

I did use to full throttle it everywhere and it had a few mods so was abit quicker than your average scooter but I am sure it would only do 60 miles to a tank. Im sure thats the same MPG as my diesel golf when driven like a grandad??? I remember when I put a 'big bore kit' and a 125cc sized carb onto its engine; it worked out cheaper to take my car to work was stupidly un-economical. I Was putting in £3.50-4 every day and was doing about 20 miles.

£12 in my 125 gets me over 250 miles easy... £12 in the T5 gets me to the next petrol station...

The Moose said: Look, let's be honest. Whilst £40k is greater than the average wage, and therefore is (by definition) greater than a lot of people, but it's not exactly a far-out-there wage.
Especially in the South East which is where the OP is! Not a far-out-there wage, no, however there cannot be many 16 year olds earning that? It therefore seemed strange for the OP to get wound up enough by what he witnessed, given that as others have said the relatively little amount would probably have got the young 'Chav' far enough to work or whatever. But I obviously don't think in the same way as the OP as I wouldn't have thought to post on the Internet about something relatively trivial. Although I am now doing that. Dammit.

Now tattoo's make you a chav? Lets have it right OP, I earn less than 40k a year i have a few tattoos and i used to drive a moped when i was 16 am i or was i a chav by definition? Boils my piss when you swarve lot throw numbers around like its what you wipe your arse with. I'd have a guess at saying at least half of PH members earn more than 40k a year, but 99.9% of them don't want to rub my f king nose in it! TURD

Absolutely not - but what I meant by my post is that everyone bashing the OP because he made a flippant throw away remark about "only 40k" is a little bit harsh IMHO! I feel that the OP was perhaps being a little bit spesh with his comments (don't get me started on the subject of the thread either), it's rather harsh to be giving him so much stick because of it. All IMHO of course

Maybe he brimmed the tank and £2.08 is all it would take? I put £9.27 of diesel in my van the other day, drove back the way I came and didn't buy anything from the shop, am I a dreg of society? In my defence I don't have any tattoos!

I had a 125cc ped (failed my car test a few times) so bought a ped for transport, i have no idea what the MPG was, but to fill it cost around £7-£10 i think (about 8 years ago now) the fuel would last me 3 weeks plus. So it's perfectly reasonable to put small amounts in! Oh & for the record i'm a hell of a lot off earning £40k at 26!

I once put £2.80 worth of fuel into a 12 plate BMW.
Does that annoy you even more Welshbeef?

This, it's not like you're doing long haul motorway runs on a 'ped; £2.08 could last you all week if you're only using it to zip up the road every now and again. The Moose said: Absolutely not - but what I meant by my post is that everyone bashing the OP because he made a flippant throw away remark about "only 40k" is a little bit harsh IMHO! Think the point is, no it's not a footballers wage, but it is a bit more than the majority of people earn isn't it. Bit crass to make remarks like that.

Welshbeef said: 93Jay said: Welshbeef said: Sorry to be pedantic but £40k is hardly a lot of money for a salary. Joke, right? Ok maybe I should take that bit back. The fact is this chap certainly wasn't on his way to his job only wearing shorts with a vulgar tattoo it has to be said (do he must have cash to afford this. I'd say what he put in the way he acted to me was the stereotypical Chav - I didn't want to say that I was expecting others to chirp in rather than me be un PC and say it. Seems its far too easy to offend some here shame you really need to grow a pair as not everyone does the PC nonsense. I think I detect more in the way of alcohol fumes here than I do of petrol fumes...

Rushmore said: 40k EUR isnt much in Germany - that is what Master-level graduate get. Take away compulsory social security (unemployment insurance, heath insurance, pension) and you struggle to live on that. Don't come to Norway then! I'm doing ok, but certainly nowhere near being able to put a grand away (and it's a higher salary than the OP mentioned). Part of that is due to the rate I'm paying back my student loan though - £340 a month because I earn a high amount. Doesn't seem to matter much that it's much more expensive to live here. In addition it would be £100 or less for Norwegians, so I'm closer to the limit in terms of monthly budget.

No doubt that scooter cost less than £600. 140mpg odd will means that he'll get atleast home and back for a couple of days! I'd be over the moon with £40k starting. I'm a fresh graduate and like the 3 million+ other graduates, we are currently all fighting for the same damn jobs at an ever decreasing salary.
What planet are you on?
