People who move next to a race track should just be told to accept it or move some place else. Just like if people moved next to a school or a sports stadium. Obviously it's a lot easier to impose a noise limit on exhaust noise than it is to tell a bunch of kids to keep quiet during recess but it shouldn't be any different.

Instead we have a situation where you can have a completely stock car which is considered to be perfectly fine to use on the public road, but too loud for use on a purpose-built racing circuit.

If you can't get on the GP the Indy circuit is well worth doing (and a lot cheaper)

Almost my favourite but Donny retains that place

Brands Hatch GP is my favourite UK circuit. It's an absolute blast! They can't run it all the time because it costs an utter fortune to rent it. The extra marshals required must add a fair bit to the cost.

I'm going in August and I can't wait!

Prefer the Indy personally.
Wish I'd done the GP before they made the changes to Dingle Dell etc.
Find the new version a bit too 'clean'; less of a flow and more corner-straight-corner-straight.
Doesn't have the flow that makes Cadwell challenging fun - which to some degree the Indy has more of.

?? Don't think that's the reason - they own it don't they?

I raced on it for the first time a couple of weeks ago and it was brilliant. Really disspointing that I've raced the Indy many many times and only once on the GP, Dont think I'll be bothering with Indy again ( unless I need points! biggrin)

True but don't they have some horrific council issues, so they liimit the use of the GP track to prevent them from upsetting their neighbours?

"Brands Hatch offers two layout configurations: the shorter "Indy" layout (1.198 miles) is located entirely within a natural amphitheatre offering spectators views of almost all of the shorter configuration from wherever they watch. The longer "Grand Prix" layout (2.301 miles) played host to some spectacular Formula One racing over the years; events such as Jo Siffert's duel with Chris Amon in 1968 and future World Champion Nigel Mansell's first win in 1985. Noise restrictions and the proximity of local residents to the Grand Prix loop mean that the number of race meetings held on the extended circuit are limited to just a few per year (usually for higher-profile series such as the BTCC and the WTCC)" ref wiki

Very true - I was just commenting on the cost issue you raised.

I understand that the individual most vociferous in causing Goodwood's problems moved near the circuit knowing full well what it's established uses were. Retired Colonel Blimp looking for something to do in old age no doubt...............Sadly they can be found the world over and Brands has it's fair share.

Well that's a factor too! I understand £45k to hire GP. I could be completely wrong of course but that's a lot of money - somewhere like Castle Coombe is probably more like £5k?

Cost isn't (I don't think) a factor. They (MSV) own the circuit - so no hire fee?

Ah I see what you mean - Yes for MSV shouldn't be a factor!

Mid 1990s I did my first track day with Club 89 on the GP cicuit in my beloved 1380 Swiftune Mini with F40 and F50 boys!!! Patrick Watts ex BTCC and Mini racer took me out in my car to show me how to do it. That was amazing.

On my second track day Nick Swift (Swiftune) spent the day with me on the GP circuit and what a fantastic day we had, he taught me so much and some very naughty words!!!

True, but how many of them were there before the circuit and how many chose to move next to it?

The former might just be true in the case of Brands Hatch, but my local kart track was under threat from the residents of a newly built housing estate recently. The track pre-dates it by decades and there have been people flying out of the adjacent aerodrome continuously since the 1920s.

God I hate NIMBYs.
I did my ARDS test at Brands, and on the day I was told by someone (not going to name names for obvious reasons) that one new neighbour was a particular pain in the arse.

To the point where, on experience days he would sit on his garage roof with a pair of binoculars and pick out the instructors that were making the tires squeal. He'd then ring the circuit and report the cars making the noise. Race control would then radio the car in question and either bring them in for a bking or terminate the session. Genuinely would love to know what he was expecting to hear from an active motorsports circuit...

A similar story was also told of another circuit who suffered from the curtain twitchers. They advertised 'bike racing' for months on end prior to an event. Day of the event rolls around and a well-known PITA rings, as expected, spouting the usual 'I can't concentrate because of the noise' 'It's terrible, won't someone think of the children' etc etc...

What he failed to pick up on was that it was in fact cycling, not motorbikes. Any further argument he had were, unsurprisingly, rendered useless.

Not sure how much truth is in that second one is but, considering who told it, I can't think of a reason to disbelieve them.

Snetts also has had problems with a couple who after retirement as they were at home all day complained about the noise and they live miles away, thoroughly stupid people.
