For this particular test I think a Turbo S would have been a much better bet
Apart from the "pitching-up without a box of launch computers and dual-clutch gearboxes" bit?
Don't they do a manual and can't you turn stuff off on a Turbo S ? But presumably there's still electronics managing torque/traction between front and rear axles I guess.
I'm 99% sure it's PDK only for the 997 Turbo S.
I'd like to see a Turbo S go against this Panigale with a "box of launch computers and dual-clutch gearboxes" to be honest! Now that would be really interesting as I think the Duke would still just about win the day.

Love that GT2 though.

A standard F1 car biglaughsmile

Yeah, that's very impressive, soon as Button can use full throttle, the way it pulls away from the bike is just something else! To be a little more on par with each other, they should have used a Moto GP bike... might have been a different story then wink

That Porsche is mental.

The bike is on a totally different planet and an absolute monster!

Hmmm. An eighteen minute video to cover a few seconds hard acceleration in a straight line ought to do it.

Superb video, just for fun it is fine smile

As to the times and traction, Santapod "set" the traction depending on the type of vehicles running, they have several grades. So only runs on the same day can really be compared, the surface setting there looks to be RWYB, set so as to stop numptys snapping drive shafts, gearbox internals etc.
That's why the grip in this vid looks relatively poor.

Top fuel gets a whole different surface setup.

Interesting. That explains how my friend managed to end up 90 degrees to the start line on her first attempt at Drag racing... on a cb500! (A commuter bike.)

A couple of things from me:

1. Great idea - I think Chris Harris (AKA Monkey Boy) - is fantastic - a great driver - and had a balanced view. Roll on the next few challenges. The car will defo win above 150mph - due to aerodynamics. I'd love to see a lap with corners (low and high speed)- around SPA? - or I guess Cadwell Park or Donnington in UK.

2. Doing standing still starts are incredibly hard and mechanically unforgiving - getting the balance between power and traction is everything - ask any GP driver (2 wheels and 4 wheels). There was a great article in Super Bike where the Ducati Diavel was up against the BMW s1000RRRRRRRRR - and the drivers were normal and pro-racer - the results conclude with Mr Visor Down - you have to nail it perfect of the S1000RR to beat the Diavel ridden by an average rider.....

3. I'm picking up my Panigale S (with all trick bits) on Saturday - and can't wait

Regards

A
Anjum,

Good to meet you at Metro yesterday. Depending on what time you're picking up your bike tomorrow, I may come down to say hi. I collected mine at last earlier today.
I can't stop going into the garage to see it.

I doubt any 2 wheeled 'gp driver' will tell you traction is ever an issue.
I club raced for a couple of years; never amazingly, but did ok at points. Never had an issue with traction off the start, even in the wet. On a decent surface bikes don't have issues with traction due to their higher centre of gravity.
The bike's issue is keeping the front wheel down.
A heavier and lower bike will be easier to get going without a wheelie, but the lower you get, the more likely to wheel spin.
With a bit of practice (traffic lights, etc) a standing start should be able to be nailed for an average rider.
When racing I did occasionally get caught out when changing gearing (for instance for Lydden, where I once managed three separate wheelies off the start line - probably should have started in second for that gearing.)

Lots of videos here for 2012 superbikes - http://www.motorcycle-usa.com/9/13348/Motorcycle-A...
Also they did the S1000RR against the two 'hyper bikes' and it doesn't do too badly - comes in second and manages the fastest quarter mile time!

I have zero time for bikes so I hope when I finally get home and watch it, the Porker has for some reason decimated the bike and all is well...

Getting away from the lights against a quick car can be problematic 1% of the time when on a bike. Normal cars or even hot cars pose no problem.
Its only when you come up against something a bit quick off the mark when you know you cannot fluff your launch or you may be eaten by their front bumper.

Driving a powerful car quickly is thrilling. Multiply that feeling by a factor of 5 and that what it feel like on a bike. (You need more talent on bike though IMHO)

I think Chris Harris appreciates this. Good vid.

Incidently, Jenson Button has just bought a Panigale and a Multistrada.

Have you noticed how many F1 drivers ride bikes? MS, KR and Brundle just off the top of my head. I know Senna rode and lent his name to Ducati for special editions. Hill was a motocycle racer before he was racing cars.
Must be something in it.

Yes Webber is a Bike nut and is seen at MotoGP events. His dad owns a Yamaha dealership back OZ I think.

I did read that Webber had a Fazer at one point.
