Methinks a bit of video 'drama' was added because that run on the bike was fking epic (wheras the 2 practice runs weren't).

Good viewing as ever tho

£23495 offers 'excellent value'?
Maybe in Mr Harris' world; but even with the expensive official exhausts the Ducati S model at least can't match the BMW S1000RR enginewise.

BMW takes it for the 'street' test.

Again; I'd like to see a bike rider that knows what they are doing from the start, which isn't the impression I got from the bits of video I paid attention to.

The best bit was realising that there will/could be more potentially even better movies soon

Ben Cope is the editor of the Visordown website, and was formerly IIRC, editor of TWO magazine back when it existed. Granted he's no Rossi or Stoner but he's certainly a lot quicker everywhere than any 'normal' biker anyway.

And Reardy Mister, Harris is hardly a "closet" bike lover: he had his CBT years ago, did it again now, and has made random bike references in his car reviews before (I think he said a Jaguar race car sounded like a ZZR1100 or something. Not sure how different a ZZR1100 is to any I4 Jap bike but there it is).

Im just waiting for him to properly come over to the dark side, get his DAS done, buy a bike and start doing the best bike reviews on the internet (or anywhere for that matter)

Great vid. Nice to see Ben doing his bit. The Ducati looks particularly yampy, which absolutely won't help the quarter mile time. Didn't Chris say it had done a 10.2 in practice, yet "only" a 10.6 in the head to head. Either way, it's great to see both driver and rider struggling to extract 100% from their respective machines.

I think we need a PH Sunday Service at Santa Pod. Let's get the PH bikes and cars together and have a play. Garlick, get on it! biggrin

How has the Ducati moved the game on so much from the 'Busa?

I went to RWYB a few years ago at Santa Pod and there were several 'Busa's there, two were of note. The first was was turbocharged and relay strugged to get it hooked up properly all day, when he did he went 11.5, most were low 12's. The second was totaly standard and banged in low 12's all day.

Now the Ducati has lower that to low 10's...

yikes

Good video.

Doesn't this bike have launch control? The latest Aprilia does so would be surprised if Ducati didn't also (especially for £23K).

I'm assuming that Ben was using the quick shifter? Isn't that cheating considering Chris was using the clutch?

I haven't watched it yet, but the covering article looks like a Wiki with all the hyperlinking. Just some constructive feedback.

Going out on my GSXR now.. ^^^you don't need the clutch going up on the box on a bike anyhow..

Great vid Chris, for your next one (above 140) organise a desmosidici if poss!

And yes, the Pagi will go above 180, but not on bruntingthorpes straight, as they were talking about in the vid.

He was a bit more of an editor. He owned and ran viserdown.com for a number of years and the site got so big, it was hard for him to run it in his spare time, so he sold it to Magicolour who published Two Wheels Only Magazine. Viserdown was also spawned from an influx of people who came from the old Motorcycle News forums. Magicolour also attempted a viserdown magazine. Sadly, it never really got off the ground.

Not very many Motorcycle Journs 'make it big'. Wozza is probably one of the better ones. People like James Whitam and McKenzie were all racers before they were journalists or broadcasters.

I would have thought this can of worms was easily obvious enough for a man of Harris' experience to give a wide berth to.

ETA: Did anyone think to play to play with tyre pressures? Particularly on the Porsche? Are they RFTs? And if they are, does the nature of RFTs negate any benefits of reduced pressures for a drag?

A few things I noted:

  • The Panigale wheelies like a turbo'ed Jap bike and looks like Angelina Jolie with two wheels bolted to her, I love it.
  • The Porker has enough horse power to pull down old barns and only a lap-sash enertia reel belt yikes
  • I'm amazed that with the claim that the Ducati will only manage a real 175 or so at Brunters. That is a figure regularly claimed for stock bikes like my own (2004 R1 - Ive seen an indicated 186 plus some revs which Im taking to be 169-174ish) and they are around 50hp down on the Ducati. The R1 is also known for being dirty through the air. Surely the Ducati isnt a quarter again dirtier?
  • Harris is a closet bike-lover and secretly wants his license but is a scardey-cat. biggrin
  • That bike rider is nice level headed chap and not all like some people in biking media you hear so much about who think they are god's gift "but just never got the breaks".
  • The bike possibly needed more carcass temperature in the rear, not really achievable with a short pre-run burnout, which will just heat the surface for the short term and potentially not allow as much deformation for a good launch. scratchchin
Of course, there are many many variables and the potential is there for a week long coulda-woulda-shoulda thread. But I like the balance this vid was done with and its a bit of fun.

Nice work chaps.

Agree with your points but I think the video was better for not worrying about tyre pressues and compounnds and all that. Just a case of heres a fast, heres a fast bike, lets see what happens!

Should have taken a 30k Audi TTRS it would have rinced the GT2 RS :-)

11.7 is pretty slow for the 1/4 nice terminal speed though

just a simple remap on the Audi will get you 11.3, maybe he can take one of those next time :-)
