Wow the crowd on this forum is sure hard to please. I had a lot of fun watching that video. Please keep parts 2,3,4 and 5 and 6 coming. I am not surprised how hard it is to launch a Porsche off the line like that. Neither was I surprised at the Ducati. A BMW S1000RR would have been beastly though. I recently bought an Aprilia RSV4 Factory APRC and that has launch control hut I don't have the balls to use it. Once again awesome video.

A couple of things from me:

1. Great idea - I think Chris Harris (AKA Monkey Boy) - is fantastic - a great driver - and had a balanced view. Roll on the next few challenges. The car will defo win above 150mph - due to aerodynamics. I'd love to see a lap with corners (low and high speed)- around SPA? - or I guess Cadwell Park or Donnington in UK.

2. Doing standing still starts are incredibly hard and mechanically unforgiving - getting the balance between power and traction is everything - ask any GP driver (2 wheels and 4 wheels). There was a great article in Super Bike where the Ducati Diavel was up against the BMW s1000RRRRRRRRR - and the drivers were normal and pro-racer - the results conclude with Mr Visor Down - you have to nail it perfect of the S1000RR to beat the Diavel ridden by an average rider.....

3. I'm picking up my Panigale S (with all trick bits) on Saturday - and can't wait

Balls to 'playing fair', if you're taking on a 200bhp bike (fk me sideways, TWO HUNDRED HORSEPOWER. ON A BIKE!) then I think the car should be the fastest thing you can lay your hands on, and deploy every 'cheat' going (is launch control / DSG cheating, or technological progress?). So for me It would've been more enjoyable if a Turbo S (maybe even a DMS/Oakley fettled one) or GTR had gone up against the bike - can the bike counter the a cars off the line traction & ease of use in just 1/4 of a mile? Still - as with all of Chris' work - it was a thoroughly enjoyable few mins at the end of my working day....

I have zero time for bikes so I hope when I finally get home and watch it, the Porker has for some reason decimated the bike and all is well...

did your evo get decimated by a bike from the lights when you had all your mates with you, just after you told them that nothing beats it ? thought so, ah well.

When you say you have zero time for them, is that you dont understand them, you've had a bad experience with them, you dont think thet're a valid method of transport or having fun, or you simply lack the skills to ride one?

Its fine, they're not for everyone. But mainly other petrolheads are indifferent to them, rather than intolerant of them.

What surprises me, is that many of the top bikes, be they jap or euro, have gone under 10's in stock form. I believe I've even seen a stock 600 go under 10's.
I'm @ Pod every weekend and I'm struggling to remember any stock bikes doing nines.

I have zero time for bikes aswell to be honest , purely because I have no interest in them on any level. I can appreciate the reasons why other people like them and ride them but that's about it.

I agree, but low to mid 10s is acceptable (!) for any street vehicle ...

I started with fast cars and this has then gone on to be an obsession with anything with an engine that moves quickly. I really would suggest having a go on a fast bike at a circuit, its a totally different (and awesome experience) to car track days. fast boats and jet skis are bloody good fun as well btw.

Could be because I was a v. avid on and offroad cyclist before i got my driving and motorbike license but to me, anything with wheels is fun. Heck, anything that MOVES is fun, and someday I plan to get my HGV license, pilot and helicopter license if I can because they seem fun in different ways, and seem like the challenge would be fun.

I can understand why my dad has absolutely zero interest in something like a Panigale, or a Lamborghini for that matter as he's an OAP and doesnt give a toss about speed. But I can't understand why petrolheads who like speed and acceleration wouldn't be absolutely turned on by bikes, as its such a big relatively cheap hit of adrenaline.

Practically, I can understand why every car enthusiast isn't a biker: its somewhat dangerous, impractical, uncomfortable, boring in that there's no radio to listen to while at red lights, etc. But theoretically I just cannot understand the psyche of a petrolhead who doesn't appreciate bikes.

I can't remember who said it, but I think this sums up my views on the last few posts:

"I like anything that's fast enough to do something stupid with."

ETA: Good god, it was Vin Diesel in xXx - might be his most worthwhile contribution to mankind. Via a writer.

I enjoyed that video but several minutes for a couple of runs may have dragged it out a bit.

I rode a Panigale recently and it really is quite hard to launch because the engine really steps up at c. 8,000 rpm, almost two stroke or turbo style. I have one experience of straight line launches against a clock on a litre bike and it really is difficult to perfect. Often the early run is fastest before you start trying too hard.

However, launching the big hyper sports bikes is much easier due to weight, wheel base, weight distribution, body position, and torque. The brand new £11.5k ZZR1400 did the following in Performance Bike (Aug 2012):

quarter mile - 10.09 at 149.09mph, 0-60 3.02, 0-100 5.48, 0-150 10.68, 0-183.25 (v-max) 28.08 in 1,786.17 metres which is very fast for a competively priced new production machine. Ideal for commuting, sports touring or racing Veyrons. However, if you want to go really fast you can buy a road legal modified Hayabusa turbo for less than a GT2 RS service.

I am looking forward to Chris getting more in to bikes.

plus one.

I grew up car crazy but now I am mad about bikes too.

To be honest any thing stock sub 10 is seriously quick, I think the Veyron does the 1/4 in about 10 secs.

Likely Pirelli Super Corsas or summat (I cant pick tyres from the tread pattern anymore nerd ). *Should* be sticky enough for a pretty decent start and with the lack of a tyre warmer, a better bet than sticking a racing slick on.
From the DooCarDi website:

"As an exclusive, all 1199 Panigale motorcycles sport new Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP tyres, the road version of the tyre used in the Superstock 1000 World Championship: 120/70 ZR17 at front and 200/55 x ZR17 at rear, the widest ever mounted on a Ducati Superbike designed for the road. Designed to maintain precise trajectories on straight stretches and around curves, the rear 200/55 x ZR17 tyre maximises the area of contact and the leaning speed by combining the 200 mm width with a higher profile. The tyres have structures and compounds deriving directly from the Pirelli experience in the Superbike World Championship, and feature casings specially studied to guarantee rigidity in extreme braking and shoulders that maximise the area of contact. In addition, the double compound obtained by using new polymers facilitates the rapid heating of the tyres and assures a constant grip.

i like this video, its the old ducati - 1198 vs a ferrari 458
dragstrip first, then to keep things even, timed lap at a circuit.

i got my panigale in spring, and can confirm its not so easy to launch, so well done that man.

Brilliant video and both awesome bits of kit, although I am a car man myself.
For this particular test I think a Turbo S would have been a much better bet but i do love the GT2 RS.
This was my first thought.

Chris - what do you think?

Wasn't expecting that result. It was even faster round a track than on a drag strip?!...

How has the Ducati moved the game on so much from the 'Busa?
I suspect the issues you're seeing is that santa pod can be quite hard to launch as it's a proper drag strip surface - I suspect designed to cope with cars that have really silly hp and massive tyres. Much easier at an airfield like Elvington.

A turbo Busa should really be under 10. Most 900cc+ sports bikes from the last twenty years or so should be under 11 seconds. Easily get under 10 with a few cheap mods - should be able to get a sub-11 second bike for £1k or so easily enough.
