Well I was in my 30s in the 80s and the only car I heard the term widow maker applied to at the time was the 911 Turbo

Always understood these had a bit of a reputation in their day, to the extent that a car dealing friend was adamant that FSH in an ad, referred to the handling rather than the service record.

Lots of women who's husbands drove these became widows in the 80s.

You've misread the thread. It's widow makers not window lickers ;-)

Ferrari F40 surely...quite a number of people met nasty ends in these. I doubt that many of the champagne swilling 930 turbo yuppies drove them fast enough to actually kill themselves, though I may be wrong on that point.

As someone who read every issue of Fast Lane, Car and PC from the mid eighties onward I can absolutely say without a shadow of doubt that it was the 930 Turbo that was always* the car that would be referenced in this context.

This thread isn't about what was the lairiest ever car of the 80's.

  • yes there are likely to be examples of other cars in some magazine or other.

No mention of the 205 GTI? A sudden lift even on modern tyres made the rear setup.Absolutely faithful, but very unforgiving.

Rarely is it described as a supercar.

The P6000 only came about in the early/mid 1990s. Its mid/late 1980s predecessor was the P600, and the P6 before it.

A 930 would sooner have had P7s (Pirellis top tyre and the original low profile tyre) as OE fitment, though. P6 was more at the Saab 900 Turbo sort of level (three doors had 195/60/15 P6s, five doors came with metric Michelin TRX'es), P6000 used to be an OE fitment on X300/08 Jags among others.
Ridiculous level of bearding there. Well done Sir.

I drove a 628 which was tricky at the limit, so I imagine more power would be more so.

What about the 1986 Sierra RS Cosworth? Pre traction control, the police wrote a few off. Ford finally tamed them with 4WD...

You'd be surprised. The owners of these think they are, as they gaze lovingly at the overrated French piece of st through their rose tinted spectacles.

This makes me sad, I thought this was a enthusiasts website. 205 GTI is an iconic car.

Although lots of supercars have been mentioned as potential widowmakers the car that comes to mind first for this title is the original Renault 5 Turbo.

I have not driven one, but I have heard it mentioned that the characteristics of the turbo meant that it had a tendency to suddenly give a wodge of power half way around 2nd gear corners.

Needless to say this not necessarily a good thing.

Now this is all hearsay, anyone who knows better please correct me!!
Again not sure If I am totally correct, but the Renault 5 Turbo's reputation came from the first generation. This was I beleive due to the fact the turbochargers impellor was after the carb rather than before, causing the engine to run on when rolling off throttle and also other side effects which suprised a few people!

I'd say Mk 5 Cortina's with cross ply tyres and knackered void bushes.

i was warned when buying mine that the Triumph Spitfire has a reputation for being a bit wayward, on a particularly normal drive yesterday i had the tires screeching on a roundabout. does like to get squirrely in the wet too.

^^^^ Im tempted to agree
Although for me it was from the early 80's smile

I like the Acclaim idea
Ive owned the 5GT Turbo and a 205GTi neither of which fit the description

I still think its the 930 Turbo although did have a sneaking suspicion it may have been a Ferrari

Thanks for the contributions...........

Was it the Spitfire that has an interesting rear suspension setup - maybe something like going to extreme toe-out in compression?

Thought I remembered something along those line but I could just be talking out my ass.

Whenever I think "widowmaker", I immediately think of a certain twin turbo 993, not 1980s but reputedly a monster to drive.
993 Turbo a "monster" to drive? Don't think so...
