That would seem an odd conversion. The RX-8 makes 231, the most powerful VTEC makes 240hp and is usually accepted as being more highly strung. That sounds like a lot of work for a 9hp gain, even more so when you'd also had weight, make the car more nose heavy and raise its centre of gravity. This isn't necessarily about conversion though, is it? The RX-8 is a fairly sweet handling car that rightly or wrongly is worth two parts of f k all as a result of the rotary engine. The S2K engine makes similar power without fiddling, is a pretty small/light engine for it's type, is in some ways quite similar in terms of revvy nature and is probably more trustworthy on the reliability front. IMO it would be a decent substitution if forced induction left a nasty taste in one's mouth. I still can't see were you are going with this though. A K20 would only worsen the handling (even if only by a small part). For pretty much no power gain at a cost of probably £5000+ to attain. The only thing you'd gain is maybe reliability, although the rotary isn't half as bad as the internet makes it out to be.

PhillipM said: What was that charged with? And why did it go bang? Comptech centrifugal. It was a JDM engine (smaller flow oil jets, higher compression). It managed to loosen 2 plugs, burn a lot of it's oil and a big end went. That's what eventually killed it. But I still managed to drive it 5 miles to work, and then 5 miles home sounding like a diesel. Dipstick was dry and the oil light didn't even come on. When pulled apart the timing chain was stretched, all the piston rings shot, bent crank, signs of dett on cylinders 3&4. I suppose me driving it hard every day for 18months did it. I was on the (raised) limiter every day. I'd let it warm and then give it abuse. It went pop. No suprises really, apart from how long it took.

In asia vetec conversions are common, I've seen Escorts, Merc 190's E30's K70 toyota, etc, but the best (i'e fast) I've seen is a mini. Goes like hell, stops and handles.

One of my first JAE (Japanese Auto Extravagansa) car shows I went to (about 2002), a guy I know had spent a fortune on his MR2 Turbo. When he left he tried to "create some room" between him and an origional Mini that was following onto the motorway and couldn't (numbers that were twice the speed limit were mentioned). He later found out via the internet it had a "TypeR" swap with whatever was new at the time. I believe the only clue on the outside were red "H" badges instead on Mini ones.
