Didn't Lexus revolutionise the chav tuning scene with these rear lights?

Even BMW did something stupid by fitting those style lights to the rear of the E46 compacts?!

This is the only car that suits these lights IMHO.
I think they look pretty terrible now, even on the car that had them as standard.
In fact my first thought when I saw the pics was "some wkers fitted chav lights"

Oh, wait.
Yeah, Toyota really have a lot to answer for with those tail lights. Whoever thought mounting the bulb in the inside of an Easter Egg box looked cool needed their heads read.

The best of the bunch is the IS300, it at least has some proper power & a JZ engine lurking under the bonnet. There are a few (very few) manual spec ones, rare as rocking horse dollops - ex plodders only.

I went to to look at one of these a few years ago as a replacement for my 2.5 Mondeo. The 200 wasn't powerful enough for me and the 300 only came in auto guise. I think I'd have bought a 300 if it had a manual box...
I never quite understood why the Americans (who, as we all know, "don't drive stick" smile) were given a manual version of the 300.

But then, I've never understood why Toyota have never seemed to want to compete with the Germans. The Lexus range has always been so limited compared with the engine and gearbox options available from Audi, BMW, and Mercedes.

To be fair, the 3 series inline 6 2 litre engine in the E36 has exactly same power (150HP)

I've got a 2002 one, love it. It is a comfortable, well equiped cruiser, with just enough power to make the curvy bits good fun to drive, if not fast. Plus very reliable

I've had both the 200 and the 300 for years they were my favorite cars although a bit dated now. I can't stand BMW's because they are just far too common. I see several 3 series and M3 everywhere I go but it's rare to see an IS 300 or an ISF which to me is much more appealing.

I've had an 02 uk spec Sport for 3.5 years and 35k so far. Yes the power is a little disappointing but if you want to go faster then learn to drive it faster! I do plenty of spirited driving in mine and still get 30mpg on average using vpower. There's a lot to be said for having a car where the power is accessible and usable all the time. The engine is sweet and strong, gear change is slick and the handling predictable with nice controllable oversteer.

Unlike others have said here you can turn the TC off fully and it doesn't beep at you. Don't understand where people are thinking that it's noisy. It's refined, smooth and great on long journeys. The interior and build quality are excellent and has far more character than an Audi IMHO.

Standard equipment on the SE and Sport was excellent. Satnav and body kit were the only options for the Sport and gladly mine has neither.

Other than standard service items I've had new discs and pads and a battery.

At 95k miles "Grandad's Racing Slipper" is barely worn in.

Yes the alloys on the cars up to 2003 suffer badly from corrosion. I've had mine fully refurbed and they look superb. I'm fine with the rear lights because I don't see them when I sit in the car. The Bose 6 CD stereo is excellent but is mega fussy about which it will play. The error code messages can sometimes be reduced by cleaning the cd lens, but many people remove the unit altogether. The trouble is it then ruins the look of the centre console.

A bit of a stupid joke to be honest. Chavvy area of town I'd understand as it incorporates everyone all ethnic chavs.

That was one of the things I really "appreciate" with BMW, you can turn the T/C off fully with the press of a button (hold the DSC button for 3 seconds)...
I'm guessing the beeping ESP is a Japanese import thing. Not very socially responsible to drive around with ESP off! Like their speed limit bing-bongs.

You can turn ESP off totally on my merc too, it's fuse 13 iirc biggrin
Not quite "trusting the driver" if you have to pull a fuse ;-)

And I recall reading about Mercedes TC options, and when ask why can't you turn it off fully from the cabin they were told "this is not the Mercedes way" - says a lot imho

I'd buy one just so I can phone Halfords and ask for a set of normal tail lights to fit a Lexus.

They are good cars. Very comfortable and can be hustled along a b road very nicely.

Just a tad thirsty for the performance on offer these days.

Had one for 4 years and loved it. Reliability was amazing. Only downside was parts were expensive and it was thirsty for the performance on offer.

Thats exactly what I thought of it. Brilliant "Toyota" build quality but lacking that certain something. A bit like driving a washing machine.

I had one of these a couple of years ago, sport that comes standard with LSD and mine had the optional Aero Kit- loved everything about it!!

Apart from being a slow car low down, wind up the revs, or motorway driving it was fine.

Also as already stated- the car in the advert has a genuine Lexus Sport Grille that was fitted to the models with genuine Aero Kit fitted, so that definately would not put me off as Riggers states.

There are also a lot of folk on here saying the rear lights were chavvy, but if you look at later 04-05 plates, many had the darker tinted rear lenses, that were anything but chavvy, a lot more subtle. Saw a second hand set on eBay recently that can be fitted as direct replacements for £40!!

If Lexuses beep at you when ESP is off (which apparently they do/don't depending on who you believe in this thread!) then stuff that.
I'm sure a £30 cable with software and a Lexus Owner's forum how-to guide and you'd be able to switch that off.

I'll have to keep an eye out for a manual IS300 - as they were for police, did they miss out on any other equipment?
