Yep it was, sorry mis-read the original title.

Probably a bit of launch euphoria but interesting nontheless..
Performance yardstick of its time so was almost inevitable that any 4 door turbo car would be compared to the Ford - although by 1993 and the launch of the 405 T16 the Sierra was at the end of its model life and the Jap turbo cars like the Legacy/Impreza/Galant were on the way in.

It would have been a mighty car if it had beaten the old Ford on cross country speed as that in turn was compared very favourably to an E34 M5 for sheer pace a few years before - you have to take the comments with a pinch of salt from journos.

I'll see what other articles I can dig out for you later unless you've seen them already?
Please do!!

I think parts would be biggest problem on here. The car I linked to earlier in the thread is being sold as a 'non runner' as it need a part to do with the hydraulic clutch which is unavailable.

Still want though, I've had one in my PH dream garage forever.

Awesomely cool cars. Shame they never sold as well as the other AWD turbo cars of the day. Yes, the Sierra Cosworth 4x4 would be my pick of the bunch but the world was better for these cool Peugeots.

Yeah I love it. Id love to find one, tune it to 350-400 bhp and give it a subtle lowering... TAXI?

Something like this perhaps..

Man, much obliged! I love these old reads...
Sounds like the chassis is very able to cope with the power.. I love the interior too. Very clean

"...it doesn't come with the whiff of competition success"

So can someone please tell me what category of motorsport this car was homologated for? Various posters (including the OP) have called it an homologation special, but all the evidence I can see (including these contemporary road tests) is that it's just a low-selling top of the range rep-mobile like the Cavalier shown above. Nothing wrong with that of course, but it's not a motorsport icon of days gone by.

How did Peugeot go from 80s/90s interesting cars (205 GTi, 309 GTi, 306 GTi, 405Mi16, 405 T16, 106 GTi, 205/306/106 Rallye) to the bland st they knock out now?
Such a massive massive decline in design and desirability. Can't think of a single new Pug I'd want to drive now.
I think the same. I have owned a 205 GTI for over 10 years and have also owned a 405 MI16 – both excellent cars to drive. I also had a 1.1 106 at Uli and although not up to MI16 levels of performance, it was nonetheless good to drive. My dad had a couple 604s for company cars when I was fresh to this world so I also have a hankering for older Peugeots, but the new stuff.... Maybe a 508 estate, at a push, but if I was going to go down the French barge route, I'd rather have a 2nd hand Citroën C6.

As for keeping on topic, I've never driven a T16 so I can't comment from experience, but I have read that the 4x4 system wasn't all that good (heavy too) and from a driving perspective the standard MI16 was better. What I would like though, is a 309 GTI 16 (basically a GTI with a MI16 engine). It was sold in France as an official model as opposed to a project engine swap job.

I like that a lot. Always thought that the 405 was a far better looking car than any of the competiton at the time.

Yes, it looked like the project stalled a bit - no doubt it would have been an interesting car but special order only in this country.

I dare say the 6 or 7 over here went to high-up Peugeot bods.
Never seen a proper comparison with its contemporaries although I don't tend to collect the French car mags

I love obscure 90's stuff like this especially when it winds up those who think the Cosworth was the one and only 4 door, 4x4 saloon with 150mph potential. The 405 T16, Alfa Romeo 155 Q4, Cavalier Turbo, Renault 21 Quadra... granted all had their flaws but for some reason they appeal more than the obligitory Sapphire Cosworth and to be fair, in standard guise all were capable of giving the Cossie a serious fright.

To the classifieds!
