RE: PH Heroes: Mercedes 450SEL 6.9
Discussion
Fantastic cars. I bought one must be 10 years ago and had it for a couple of years. Silver with blue velour interior. It was an ex Jersey car with very low mileage. I went to look at it with the missus, it was for sale quite local to us. While the missus was wandering around the car saying you've got to buy it, you've got to buy it the chap selling came out to greet us. Not much chance of negotiation on price thanks to the missus's enthusiasm. It went well but was not as quick or as smooth as it should have been. Eventually I sold it to a mechanic mate who kept pestering me to buy the car. I bought a 300 SEL 6.3 not long after and had that for a couple of years.
On the James Hunt theme it was his weapon of choice for european travel. From memory the rev limiter is built into the rotor arm which they used to disconnect. He bought all his 6.9's from a mate of mine. He used to blow them up fairly regularly and phone my mate Serge. Find me another one. I don't care about the colour but it must have leather. I'm told 160 was possible. As for the dreadful sight of his 6.9 on bricks. I believe was to to avoid having to pay road tax. As another note of interest the very late 1979/1980 models had abs brakes. The first for a road car.

Not sure about 160mph due to the combination of weight, aerodynamics, torque n bhp; a recent article un one of the monthlys (Octane?) suggested it to be a truly great engine but not capable if those sort of velocities; irrespective, what else could come close, combining sybaritic comfort with (for the time) dragster performance?
Eh, none.
Make mine a brown one please with the light tan velour. Oh and some period clothes and sunglasses to REALLY look the part....

Here's one for sale at a frankly ludicrous price although it is Mint!

Bargain... this one has a third of the mileage and costs half as much again: http://www.cars.com/go/search/detail.jsp?tracktype...

They reckon top speed is about 140mph, give or take.

Lovely car, out of interest, does anyone know what happened to James Hunt's old car? I remember seeing pics of it on bricks, hope it didn't get scrapped.
I saw it in 2002 at a car storage place in Berkshire. Had it's wheels on and looked okay. They're a lovely old beast and I'd settle for a 280 to be honest. There was something about Mercs from the 60's and 70's.
