For some bizarre reason in the mid 90's I bought a Rover 800 Vitesse, it was an old mans car, still is an old mans car and at the time I wasn't an old man....(I am now though)

My worst car also happens to be my favourite - 1996 Rosso red/pink Alfa 146ti. It was a nail when I bought it, but I didn't care. An amazingly quirky car to have at 18, I drove it everywhere like I had just stolen it and consequently needed to replace the clutch, radiator (spent all summer with the heater on full blast just to keep the temp down), suspension arms etc. Needless to say I couldn't afford to do any of this, assuming I also had to put fuel in the tank to make it go. Happy times.
Cam belt snapped so I sold it on ebay for spares. Enjoyed a new lease of life with an 'Alfa restorer' albeit short lived, it was scrapped in 2006.

Bought pre-registered with only 93 miles on the clock. Uncomfortable, Cheap plastic looking dash, Doors sounded terrible when you closed them, rubbish on petrol but worst of all, there was no ashtray or ciggie lighter.
Got rid of it after only six weeks for a Hyundai believe it or not and that was much better than the Focus. Did you not open the doors or look at the dash before buying it then I did but the more I used it, the more it annoyed me.

Fair enough it should run well now I thought. Then the camshaft had to be changed as it wore flat edges on the lobes. That was a grand. 3 months later went into limp mode and was gonna cost 300 to fix. Had 105k on it and I finally threw in the towel. All this in 18 months. First 4 years was fine thg to be fair to it. Sounds like you bought my old one! My mk4 gt tdi 110 has been the same (except camshaft). Clutch, flywheel, all bushes front and rear and still get knocks and wobbles along with limp mode and water leak. Forgot to add about the rusty wings. Amazing... surely it can't be that bad?

A toss up between a new P plate Golf Mk3 GTI and new '53 plate BMW Z4. Both were utter sacks of s t in terms of reliability - although the Z4 probably shaded it - it actually spent more days back at the garage than it did on the road before I got rid. It was also awful to drive, bouncing around on uneven roads on its stupid run-flats, and it wasn't that quick. Added to that, the local dealer didn't know his arse from his elbow, and I caught him out lying a couple of times. So the Z4. I still frown when I think of that PoS.

I found it OK as long as you didn't let the front tyres get too worn, at which point it did really lack traction in the wet. interesting idea, compromise my acceleration to over come the limitations of the cars design or .. buy a 4WD car

The lowest of a pretty lowly bunch was a Venezuelan built Ford Corcel. My first and only Ford I've ever had. Body was a lash-up of an old Renault 12 and a 1500cc four pot motor of unknown power or oil/water retention. Brakes were very iffy but she was great in mud and floodwater upto headlight hight. It cost me Bs2,000,000.00 cash in hand. Thats about £1800. What a PoS.

A couple of contenders here.......Ford Sierra 1.8 16 valve. Unfortunately there were 8 in the engine and the other 8 in the radio.
It went back to the dealers more times than I can remember. I am not a violent man but I apparently I threatened the Sales director after the car broke down for the 6th time in 4 weeks.
Ford bought the car back from me when we went to court.
The second was a company car. I went for a Rover 400 as it had air con- well for 3 weeks at least. It was a hateful car

Panel colours went from orange, through red to pink. Peeling pink spoiler (which just sounds a bit wrong) looked horrible. Despite that it went well, but I could not get a sensible insurance quote on it when he came to sell it. Sold it to some Estonians who seemed ecstatic with it.

I remember years ago having an xr3 and my father had the 216 vp which I think was same car as the vitesse but with leather seats and different wheels, I was quite impressed with the 216 Efi engine it revved nicely, and was quicker than my XR3 also it was more economical, it also didn't handle to badly. I can't remember my father having any trouble with his but maybe it I'm looking through rose tinted glasses, but I think back then that rover were equally as good as any vauxhall or especially ford at the time as I think ford were making body shells out of rusty old indesit washing machines and using the crappy cvh. And it also pre dated the head gasket eating K so it never was tarnished with those problems.
