this is the perfect choice brilliant cars and sorted reliability wise now.

I wouldn't not worry to much about autos for towing and off road especially if he is in any way considering a disco as their auto boxes are very very strong.

Does he want a manual for driving or towing, because in the Over 1900 kg category according to the towing awards* the Land Rover Discovery TDV6 HSE Auto wins. The Range Rover TDV8 HSE takes the "Money no object" award.

Disco is great choice, will forward that choice along.

Whilst the navara's are popular and there are many on the roads the brakes are rubbish and he has a trailer so the pick up load area is not neccesarily needed.

What's up with the xc90's apart of them almost being 10 years old and still no obvious face lift I thought they were solid cars?

As for ford's he's over 60 so whilst the ranger may be a good choice and have rave reviews he can't get over the old ford sayings lol

What about 3.0d land cruisers or touaregs?

I'd agree the XC is seriously dated, and auto only I think?
