Best hot hatches - votes and nominations please
Discussion
Why not make it easy and have three catergories: 1) best fwd 2) rwd 3) 4wd hot 'hatches'? or shall we just brake it all down once the results all come in
I always believe it should be fwd but understand why people include others, my old modifed 4wd pulsar gtir was everything a hot hatch should be, just quicker and therefore more likened to 4wd rallyreps

1. Pug 306 Rallye
2. Pug 205 GTi 1.6
3. 8P Audi S3 (waits for questions why) - I was going to say the 8L S3, but it wasn't eaxactly exiting, but it was the first "prestiege" mega-hot hatch way back in 1998
I have \ do own all of the above over the last 15 years
I haven't owned or driven a R26R but that must be in there and ditto the Mk1 Golf Gti - the Daddy

Anyone been counting?
Looks like a solid win for the Clio Williams from the number of posters mentioning it.
not wanting to dis the Renault but how can anyone really value it over a 'grale?Looks like a solid win for the Clio Williams from the number of posters mentioning it.
(ps i owned one and my "little"sister had the other- no guesses for which way round )
From experiences of cars I've driven or been a passenger in, of which there are only 5.
1. Renaultsport Clio 172 Cup - Fun factor to cost ratio.
2. BMW 130i - The noise and Q car element.
3. Audi S3 8L -The first time I ever felt myself being pushed back into my seat. Also a great looking car and for having Quattro.
4. Volkswagen Golf GTI (MK5) - Mostly for the noise.
5. Renaultsport Clio 200 Cup - Because of this http://youtu.be/htEcS9RLKO0?t=3m25s
ETA: That's in no particular order, I just put my car first as it's mine

From what I've driven.. top 3:
1. 205 Gti 1.6 (H reg so 115) - should never have sold this
2. AX GT - underrated
3. VW Golf R (2011) - current car, growing on me
How you finding that Golf? Been eyeing them up recently but it's tough between a DSG one of those or an S3. 1. 205 Gti 1.6 (H reg so 115) - should never have sold this

Oh, my vote (if they're allowed).
1- Escort Cosworth
2- Mk1 Golf GTi
3- Mk2 Focus ST (only because I owned one and loved it).
S3 for hooning, R DSG for every day use and hooning
1. Lancia Delta integrale. The plaudits are long but 6 WRC manufacturers titles in a row, 4 drivers titles, 44 event victories & numerous European & national wins from an era when engineers demanded road cars meet the criteria of racing regulations. For me the golden age of rallying which gave us Ford Sierra/Escort Cosworths, Mazda 323 Turbo, Toyota Celica ST165/185/205 GT4's, Mitsubishi Galant & EVO, Subaru Legacy & Impreza, Nissan Sunny/Pulsar GTiR, Golf Rallye etc I don't think we'll see the like again.
2. Renaultsport Clio 182 Trophy. Jean Ragnotti helped with the development & the Sachs Motorsport remote reservoir front dampers & Eibach springs supposedly make it 1sec per/km quicker than regular 182. Makes quiet a difference over a long lap like Nurburgring. They also removed the auto wipers & HID headlamps, climate control to loose some weight but added Recaro Front seats & Speedline Turini alloys to loose 1kg per corner of unsprung weight.
3. Honda Civic Type-R EP3. Changed publics expectations on FWD hot hatches making 200PS the accepted norm for OEM and not aftermarket tuned potential. Plus that engine/gearbox combination arrived during a time when hot hatches were in the dole drums, VW were still badging MK4 Golf's as GTi's with a 2L N/A 115PS engine or 1.8L 150PS turbo & the 306 GTi6 was gone & the only offering from Peugeot was the 206GTi had 137PS. Though to be fair the Clio 172 had been launched but different size category & no.2 above was best of that model.
4. Peugeot 106 Rallye series 1. Another homologation special built in low numbers to meet the 1300cc rules.. Striped back no frills junior rally car for the road. No power steering, no electric windows, not even a hatch spoiler like the GTi. Hand built high revving 101PS 1.3L engine and close ratio box made you feel & hear every single sensation of driving even if it wasn't as quick as the GTi or its bigger 306GTi/Rallye brother.
5. Renault 5GT Turbo. Only because I had 2 & even after my first one was written off after someone ignored traffic lights, the 205GTi, UNO Turbo i.e. & Golf GTi MK2 16V just didn't excite me enough on trst drives to warrent change. Could be said to be where Renaultsport started on its road to hot hatch supremacy as it like all the Clio's since, had a factory supported single make hugely successful race series here & in Europe to help develop future racing talent.
