Why? Small turbocharged engines have been around for years, why would this one be inherently unreliable?
Small piston and thin rods in this day and age of producing cars on a budget? That doesn't bode well. These are over-stressed engines, turboed or not.
VW already has some problems with the allegedly-brilliant uber-complicated 1.4 TFSI.

This demands a car with a simple, reliable and competent engine.
The yanks have the right idea by offering it with a single engine. The 2.0 litre 4 cylinder (37.2 mpg combined) with either a manual or auto gearbox.
Keeps the maintenance side of things simple and costs down.

I see no reason why this engine won't make over 200hp when tinkered with appropriately. People have been tuning the aforementioned daihatsu 3 pots to 200hp and beyond for years now.
Mine had 160hp when I sold it.
This one makes 245hp. On stock internals.

That looks incredible. Stock internals! Amazing.Mine had 160hp when I sold it.

[quote=StuMI16]Id really like to start "re-creating" old hot hatch backs
Think about it 1.4 tfsi in a Golf Mk1 Gti
EcoBoost in a MK2 XR2
Keep the Reliability and the electrics - Full Body restoration with some up to date brakes and suspension components and you have reliable cars with character
I've thought this would be a good idea for a while, like you say much more individuality and style, mk1/2 escorts with zetec engines etc much more fun!

Am I the only one that thinks 167lbft from cramming 22psi into a 1000cc engine isn't actually that impressive?
Anyone know what pressure the standard engine uses to make 125lbft?
It's all been done in some way, but it's just a very nice little engine really.Anyone know what pressure the standard engine uses to make 125lbft?
Standard engine I've seen 16psi max and on my first run with the superchips map I have yet to see 22psi, but still running in so taking it easy.
But it feels much more rounded now and the slight throttle hesitancy is now gone so now it indeed feels like a smooth little V6 - without the thirst.
If you're not a speed demon (anymore ;-) ) but very much appreciate a very well rounded chassis and a nice AND frugal engine, this is the way to go...

16psi makes it an effective 2090cc with 60lbft/litre.22psi makes it an effective 2490cc with 67lbft/litre.
Fair play, it's actually improved BMEP from standard! Still not amazing figures either way though.
