I'm guessing that replacing a wheel bearing or some other such trivial part is likely to wipe out £1k in a heartbeat right?
Anyone know what you'd get to weigh it in??
£30 from eurocarparts and a couple of hours to fit.Anyone know what you'd get to weigh it in??
Most mechanical are pretty cheap, and at that price, you wont be going to the dealer for them.

"cruise control (not working)"
How long would it take to find all the buttons, work out what they're suppose to do, and whether or not they're working?
If it's anything like my E Class I'd say about 12 months. How long would it take to find all the buttons, work out what they're suppose to do, and whether or not they're working?
And a bit more to figure out how to change the time on the clock.
Ergh, the same dealer is selling a T Reg W140 S600 for £8k

What a nice car. People I know have had an S320 saloon, S600 Coupe, S420 Saloon, and the next generation S600 Coupe, all brilliant.
This is almost certainly not an S500 however, but rather a 500SE with an S500 badge, if the K plate is what it was originally issued on. There are a very few 1994 pre-facelift cars with the new badging (IE 500SE became S500 and so on), but these are pretty much all on an L plate. Also, this car has the white indicator conversion which was never available on the pre-facelift cars. The rear end is the biggest giveaway as the lights are quite seriously different.
In fairness the dealer has titled his advert correctly (500SE) it is the PH title / badge that is wrong I think... Cracking shed and something that I will own one day when I have plenty space to put the various old mercs I want out to pasture
They're tremendously impressive if rather characterless cars, I find. I like the colour of this one though.
My brother had an S320 (smaller engined and a much later facelifted car, but it was still loaded with kit) in a dark metallic blue-black about ten-odd years ago.
It really was superbly competent when it was running right. It felt very well built, but though it was a lot more reliable than the horror of an S500 W220 which replaced it, his W140 was still quite a 'needy' car, suffering myriad electrical faults including a persistent misfire which was never solved. A trip to the dealer frequently left him a grand or two lighter ...still, few would run one of these like that now.
They're lovely machines, but if ever there was a car for managed retreat, this is it. Run it 'till the big bill strikes, with a smile on your face.
