I need an estate for my next car in a few months time, this is my sub £25k shortlist so far. Which would you choose and why? Daytona Grey B7 RS4 Avant: B8 S4 Avant: E61 M5 Touring:

I'd have the B8. It isn't as good a car as either of the others but it's a far better sub £25k car. It's far more reasonable to run and far less likely to become an irritating millstone around your neck. It's got sensible enough fuel consumption that you wouldnt think twice before taking it to the Alps and back, etc etc.

I adore the RS4, but I feel perhaps they're a little long in the tooth now, expensive for tyres/brakes etc and I'm not sure I want a manual.

M5 without question imo
The others are far from bad but the M5 will make you smile more

Depends what type of driving you will be doing. Personally I would be torn between an rs4 due to miniMal depreciation as I can see the more complicated m5 depreciraring massively. But they do sound incredible the b8 s4 would be more relaxing with auto box and at the end of the day it's newer than the rest. However I could see it depreciating massively. But would be more economical than the other 2 and cheaper to run imo.

Thanks - it'll be used mostly at weekends and evenings, will have a van to drive during the day so this is for carting doggy around and general messing around. Will be 99% B-roads as I'll be living in the country.

Considered an RS/S6? they are more of a m5 rival.
As a daily I would go for the b8, much nicer place to be in the b7. But the other two are much more epic.

I'd love a C6 RS6 but sadly they're well out of budget for me at £40k+, and the C5 RS6 is too old and problematic. Demonic cars both of them though, although residuals are shocking which I could never entertain (read afford!). Another big draw of the B7 RS4 is their reasonably solid residuals.

I personally would go for the b7 rs4 then as it will be a more Involving drive. I preferred the older b5 rs4 worth a look perhaps. http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/4053756.htmCan't see the rs4 depreciating too much in the next few years. Particularly with new ones being ridiculously expensive for what they are.

That is the EXACT spec of RS4 that I would want, Daytona Avant with optics pack, Recaro buckets and flat bottomed steering wheel! Love the B5 RS4, a friend had one, but they feel prehistoric these days!

For what it's worth I have an S4 avant but lust after an M5 (for its chassis dynamics as much as anything)

I'd go for the RS4 Avant - in fact I nearly did, before I gave into my love of a non-black interior and bought an XKR instead.
For me the M5 tourer is a difficult car to love, visually. I never liked the Dame-Edna headlights, but the killer for me was just the slab-sided fat bottom.
The newer Audi? Meh, slower and less pretty than the B7 RS4.

Billy - that's interesting, is your car the B7 or B8 S4? AlexKing said: I'd go for the RS4 Avant - in fact I nearly did, before I gave into my love of a non-black interior and bought an XKR instead.

That V10 wins it for me, but I have a feeling after a while I'd wish I was driving an Alpina B5S touring. Lord knows how rare those are mind.
