well im nearly old enough to drive and i am hoping to get a classic as my first car something with future potential. trouble is confused.com are playying up and most og the companies are not showing. im basically hopefully going to get a 2dr viva hb saloon as there is a stunning immaculate white one on ebay but its an auto, will this effect insurance? my dad said he could easily enough make it a manual for a hundred quid, but i would like you guys to give me a rough idea of what insurances are like, of what did show up on confused the lowest was £2400 so can it get lower? in the future obviously it will get upgraded from its 1100cc engine into a c20xe and the rest. heres the car http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1967-Vauxhall-Viva-SL-Au...also on my list i have chevettes and mk1 fiestas your thoughts on this car? cheers jack

Full marks for your efforts and intentions. Hate to say this but you'll struggle in your own name.
Our lass is 24 and I've only just managed to get her insured on both the classics.
Most wanted to run a "NORMAL LIMITED MILEAGE POLICY"
Try:
- Adrian flux
And
- Lancaster
They're cheap for me.
Off topic: there's folk who work at Flux and Admiral on here nowadays

If you've got 3.5k to spend on THAT, you shouldn't care about insurance prices.

You won't get classic insurance at your age, so forget that idea.
Not all that keen on the idea of buying a rare and mint classic to modify, either.

Why buy a classic car you need to butcher to get what you want?

Surely what he can afford & what he wants to buy are largely irrelevant? The issue is 17 year old, classic car, modified classic car. All together = no chance! Jack: find a £250 snotter, insure that as cheap as possible fully comp. Buy that classic, and keep it as a family member and get your dad to insure it. Use it for day's out and nice times. Rest of the time rag the arse outta a diesel fiesta mk3/4

Credit where its due, its a bit better than what other new drivers pick. although i do agree... if you are going to make hefty changes. Get a cheaper one so you can save the money for parts . I'd imagine you will seriously struggle to find better quotes than that if you are under 21. O/T i once tried to get insured on a triumph gt6 mk2 and it came up as £760 at 21. The problem is they want it to be a second car (which means splashing out on another car/policy etc.) Why cant we just drive one cool car....its our choice. I'd honestly be happy to live with a old TR6 or summat.

I am also 17 and have thought about getting a classic. Sadly, very few companies will touch our age. I am not saying it is impossible, but it is very hard. Now I feel that the Viva is linked will be rated a 6/10.

As above. Do not buy a classic and mod it. You will not get a classic policy. Nearly all insurers that specialise in classic insurance are amending TandC's against modded cars. Speak to people lice classic line or Chaucer, they may be able to help but NOT if your car has any mods.
Best of luck.

Best of luck. I had a modded classic 3 years ago as my first car. Footman James have however, to my knowledge, stopped insuring 17 year olds, unfortunately. My crash probably didn't help that.

I don't think £2400 for a 17 year olds first car is bad. If he can afford the car and the insurance then why not?
As others have said though, you won't be able to insure it on a classic policy because of your age. However if you've gotten a quote for £2400 on a comparison site, you should be able to get a few hundred more knocked off by doing some shopping around yourself. Tesco is the cheapest for me at the moment.
It cost me £2000 to insure my first car in 2005 and that was a 1995 1.4 Ford Escort. So £2400 isn't bad I don't think.

Lancaster were good for me (my first car was an MGB) but I've a vague feeling they've upped their minimum age to 25.
I had absolutely no problem with modifications. I told Lancaster about everything I'd done (including a fair amount of engine work) and they it didn't affect the quote at all.

You'll have to declare all modifications to your insurer who will increase your premium, the one you're trying to reduce. Seems a bit counter productive to me, quite apart from ruining a perfectly good classic car.
