I guess part of this decision will be made depending on where we move to next year i.e. if we end up living somewhere that is still relatively built up and the only roads you can really put your foot down on are a-roads outside of town, in which case having an auto wouldn't be too bad, perhaps better in some ways. However if we move to a place closer to twisty country roads then the manual option m3 would be a better bet I reckon.

What do you guys reckon? We're currently based in North London which isn't ideal for hooning around until you get out of the built up areas. However next year we'd like to move further out but still commute into the city. So we'll probably have to compramise between a bit of countryside but not fully. Epping or Hertfordshire for those familiar with the South.

Norman you've been saying this for about 2 years.

Just let us know when it is actually fully working and available.

Yes I'm just about there

Fitting the Mark 1 version at the moment, had been given Bum info as to that was the early / late Flex plate with the ignition marks so having another flywheel made, should have that next week

I have since found another gearbox JUST come available, better and will bring the gearlever to the correct place without a lot of modifing. The bell housing are being made for that now, should have them within the next couple of months, so should then be in a position to be making the kits.

CAD of the bell housing below

That would make the XKR option a whole lot tastier!

Roughly how much do you think a manual conversion would cost? Similarly how much do you think a good condition XKR with gearbox in need of replacing would go for?

One other thing, how hard is it to replace the dash covering? I much prefer the grey-ish finish to the wood.

Cheers,

Nick

I see you are in London so not that far from me, best we have a chat, send me an email and when best time to call

One of the problems with XKR values is they are worth quite a bit striped just for the parts

Not a problem taking the old dash out and replaceing if you can find a compleat dash to your liking
There are also companies that will recover for you

Thanks Norman. I'm based in Finchley. But won't have the budget for a new car till around this time next year so I wouldn't want to waste your time.

Where are you based however? Do you do regular Jag work e.g services, general fixes etc?

I stepped out of an Alpina B3 Bi-Turbo 58 plate that I had owned from new and bought a 55 plate 4.2 XKR-S - last of the old shapes. I know the Alpina isn't an M3 but it is a very special 3 series. The XKR-S was pricey at £23K for a 32,000 mile example and I realise that it isn't really a comparison to a 7K example but the Alpina was £50K new. I have NEVER ONCE regretted the decision to move to the Jag in the 18 months that I have owned it.

Running costs are OK (except for the Brembo discs I had to have replaced at 40,000 miles) but I think these are unique to the XKR-S. I also only get about 16 to 17 MPG.

I'd always have the Jag over a BMW.
