A 599 AND a holiday, what ever next, drive the thing to Monza next month?

Nice. Very nice.

Glad the punt on the RS worked out - loved reading about that car in Evo, and again on here. To own the car of your dreams, however fleeting, is surely the carnut equivelant of carpe diem. Bravo.

Be interesting to find out how the 599 compares (or doesn't) to the GT3 as a drivers car.

Love the fact you're willing to take an 'educated' punt to own dream cars.

Ignoring the £40k deposit, £350 pm on finance is just hilariously little money to own something like this. I might opt out of my company car scheme laugh

Will be very interested to hear what the running costs are like, particularly if you do run it more or less as a daily.

Beautiful car, good luck, and hope it doesn't bankrupt you so we can see what you go for next time. Living the dream smile
40k 'deposit'! Well, they do say you have to speculate to accumulate.

However, I suppose to run this Ferrari daily, why shouldn't it be fine? Fill up, and drive.
Simples, provided no disasters - eek ahh, you've had one already with the tyre(s)!

I suppose with a gaping hole you didn't have much choice but to replace quickly, but that price of £360 (with vat) each 'before fitting' seems a lot (anyway, tyres should be fitted free - unless of course you are referring to valves and balance?).

Even Kwik Fit stock P-Zeros 305/35Y20 at £327.60 'inclusive' fitted.

Just an illustration, not that you'd want your average Kwik-fitter to fit them to a Ferrari
...or did you? and they ripped you off! biggrin

£350/month really isn't much to get yourself into a car like this when you look at what it would get you on a new car. The small matter of £40k is harder but not outrageous!
I don't really want to focus on this - but he's not buying anything and that £350 a month figure is just giving too many people a hard-on here.

£40K (FORTY THOUSAND POUNDS - 2 top-end Fiat 500s - 3+ years of minimum wage - a nice Sierra Cosworth 3dr smile ) + £350 a month is just to offset depreciation - there's a balloon (or as someone said ZEPPELIN) payment in there somewhere - lurking - waiting for the unwary...

On a good day, values will stay firm and that £40K won't have been entirely thrown into into polish for the shiny showroom windows and someone's new yacht - on a bad day, ah let's not go there eh? smile

i can understand the maths behind the buying an appreciating car on finance, but one that's falling? Hmm
What's finance got to do with it? Would it be any wiser to buy a depreciating supercar with your life savings?

He's put in a large enough chunk of cash that he's not going to end up upside down on the car any time soon.

If worst case scenario happened and he only got the £40k back come resale, £350 a month to own a 599 for a while isn't bad really biggrin

Oh and for the record, the 599 GTO (despite the heretic name) is my favourite car in the world.
I saw (heard) one on Bond Street in London at the weekend. The numberplate was GTO 599F. I did a little man wee when it went past.

Who cares, he made decent money on the RS4.0 and this is allowing him to 'live the dream' and buy a V12 Ferrari. Using 'Man Maths' the deposit is free (presumably some of the profit from the RS4.0) so he's renting a Ferrari for £350 p/month.

Good on him, I say.

Chris,

I am glad that you experienced lurve in the RS 4.0. I really enjoyed watching your videos. (Oh... that just sounds wrong.)

Congratulations on the 599: nice. I've also been looking at prices on these over the past few months. They tend not to sell quickly. But they do look decent value and they are still striking things engineering wise despite the "old" perception. Who cares eh? I would also have reservations about the gearbox however...

Back to the RS... what made you sell now? RS 3.8 prices seem to have softened a little recently. The 991 GT3 comes out, when? Is it later this year? I am interested in buying a 997 RS 3.8 and I know I will lose money on it, but I don't mind being a bit more patient if values are about to lurch down due to the new car launch. Appreciate any insights / speculation! Thanks.

Simon.

Harris, you're a fooking legend. The 599 is fabulous, and when we're all queueing up at the pearly gates, divided into two camps - died rich and died happy, you're going in the second queue.

Find this all a bit odd. Describing a supercar as a 'smoker', decrying a model for having miles that you wouldn't bat an eyelid about and then putting money into Ferrari's coffers, despite having made a lot of noise about their 'practices'. confused

you planned it didn't you..buying the 4.0 with your credentials to make a profit while having some fun on the way..rendering you not unworthy. 4.0 should have gone to its real owner 1st hand rather than to a speculator. now you have had your problems with ferrari it is going to be with porsche.

yes

Waa waa waa but he's renting it; for that money you could have a [insert shed of choice] waa waa waa.

Who cares, are any of us paying for it on his behalf? FFS.

Chris, enjoy, if I could afford it I'd be doing exactly the same. "You only live once" and "you can't take it with you", right.

No where in my post did I state he was buying anything rolleyes Are you seriously saying that 2 new Fiat 500s is a better way to part with £40k? I'm not sure where 3x minimum wage comes into it, it's obvious that Chris isn't on minimum wage and it would be stupid for someone on minimum wage to attempt to do.

My point was that £350/month rental would get you into a boggo new SLK here and I know which I'd rather "rent" as you put it. Yes, the £40k will take a depreciation hit (how much being anyone's guess and the 'gamble' that Chris is taking. There won't be a balloon because he won't be keeping it.

Why does this always turn into a fking finance discussion. This is a CAR journalist buying a dream CAR. That's it. He's not, not never will be on, minimum wage so such comparisons are useless.

Ferrari's are supercars designed for playboys and the super rich. If you can get in a 5 year old one for S class money then what's the problem?? If he'd had the whole purchase amount to put down then is that ok? Or should we then question him about where he got the money?

Nice car, good purchase and decent price considering the depreciation and the likely continued depreciation curve. Not bought at the bottom but chances of 2 years motoring with £5k a year depreciation doesn't seem too bad to mee for a near on 200mph supercar. Quite tempted myself!
