Great stuff. Reminds me of when I needed some bumper chrome and a cd changer for my Sovereign but bought a taxed and MOTd manual X300 XJ Sport instead, as it had good chrome smile

Thanks for this, though Chris. I was losing the faith a bit with doing my Volvo and XJR up today, but you have restored my zest. Good man!

there's just something so damn cool about the old M cars, you just get the feeling it was about the driver and not marketing or magazine statistics, the poor old thing does deserve to live again

but its not going to be cheap

That shell is, unfortunately, toast....

The good news is that any E28 shell could be used to rebuild/reshell the M5 as all the M specific parts are still OK, other than one rear brake and hub assembly.

Given how rare/scarce the E28 M5 is in RHD, I'd be on a mission to reshell it. If you have the paperwork for the damaged car a new VIN panel can be ordered from BMW to graft in to the new shell, too.

Chris,

BMW never raced the M5 - it had to have 5000 made to qualify for the ETC. The M635CSi was never raced either. Instead they raced the 635CSi with great success, using a breathed on M30 12v pushing out around 260-ish bhp. Many teams raced the E28 with the 2.8 M30 version... In fact the E28 came 2nd in 1984 and 1985 at the N'ring 24hrs...

Now, I am off to stroke my beard...
Confirms my info. Thanks. Nice beard.

To whoever was in the lovely red one early doors on the M25 yesterday near Heathrow that was one lovely looking (and sounding!) car. Gave you a thumbs up but I think you had the blinkers on and didn't see. So here's a virtual one too!

I saw Chris's car the other week too and it is a lovely, lovely thing. Swift too!

The M5 was raced (by ORECA, IIRC) in the French Supertourisme series:

I had the very great fortune to own D547YWV from 1988 for a few fab years.
Sorry to see that she's had a bit of a rough ride recently ! I've used the YWV part almost ever since, as the lasting impression is still rather strong.

Chris, I'm after some E28 M5 parts that you might not need from that donor car...

Understood.

Send me a list and I'll what there is. Assuming I'm not going to drop a fortune re-shelling it!

Cheers - I'm after front and rear ARBs, the long positive battery cable that runs from boot to engine bay, the trim set from the boot that covers the battery and the toolkit and bootlid liner.

Drop me an email through my profile if you might be able to spare any of those, and how many portraits of Liz you'd like for them.
