0-60 in the late 7's ? 200hp? looking like that?!

£1200 worth of Saxo VTS next to you at the lights and you'll be sliding down the headed leather avoiding eye contact pretty quick!
Are many teenagers going to be driving the GT86/BRZ? Anyone else surely doesn't give a damn about that sort of thing.
I don't think thats the case at all..

When purchasing a performance car i would suspect performance would come up at least once in conversation.

I actually love the styling of both, its just they 'look' faster than they are - and to me, that's an automotive no-no

They started with a nice idea of having a proper RWD chassis... But why the h.ll is the body design sooooooooo extremely awful and old looking... What a missed chance here.

This was a much nicer and more modern design:

Look at the front overhang on that!

I think the front engine - rear drive layout gives proportions which look old fashioned to some. Modern coupes are front drive and look like shoes.

There's far more to performance than 0-60 times though, and you specifically mentioned the traffic-light grand prix which IME is the territory of teenagers (and those who wish they were still teenagers).

My dads old car from back in the early 1990s was big, fat, heavy, st and a rover

This is lighter, has more power and is slower

Brilliant

edit: the rover of course hated corners of any kind

When the stus went in for a service the other day I had a quick butchers at the 86 that was in the showroom. Nice enough looking, not massive, but why would you buy one when you could get the same sts n giggles from a used Nissan 350z?
At a guess, because the 350 is heavier, thirstier, older, bigger, doesn't handle as well, and will cost more to insure and tax?
yes All true. I have a zed and am waiting for an 86.
Doesn't mean the zed is any lesser the car though - I love it but it's time for a change.
We have a Z, and I agree.

I think this first sentence explains the full story, and why I just did not read anymore. "It's the comparison test we've all been waiting for and yet realise, deep down, is ultimately totally pointless" No st.

I get what your saying, its about the experience as a whole...and my opinion is highly subjective.

just, for me, if the car was a bit more brutal power wise, it would be the perfect package. I am sure i am not alone! smile

I wonder how long it will be until either some insane tuner, or subaru themselves fits the subie with a turbo and AWD?

Then, I will be quite interested... smile
Surely that will pretty much be the latest shape imprezza then. I'd rather see a RWD supercharged gt86.

Yes, but for different reasons.

I don't think my back could cope with getting in and out of the thing smile

Surely if you live in the states and you are into drag racing you wouldn't be buying one of these even if it were a bit quicker. I bet they're pretty crap at off-roading too wink
Reckon you might be surprised. Every road test in the states will likely mention or test 1/4 mile. Check out the BRZ Motor Trend test in YouTube. Also drag racing is just so accessible that all sorts of cars are used the "import" scene is pretty big in America.

I'm sure these things are going to get some other engine configurations. I'm actually pretty interested in them, although I'll be honest the power/performance figures are a little on the low side. If this comes out with a little bit of an upgrade, I will make some space for it outside my place.

Sorry, just dont get it. The real comparison is here: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/4112952.htm or here: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/4155322.htm or here: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3532405.htm let alone looking at what kind of Porsche £25k will buy. Who in their right minds would buy a new Toyota or Subaru in preference to these??? End rant...

To be fair, you don't half talk some st. Those into 'drag racing' are not this car's target market, so why even mention it? The Miata/MX5 is HUGE in the states. Massive. Ergo, these will do well too.
Who said they wouldn't do well??

And here's an idea, maybe you should have a browse around some US forums. I think you'd be amazed at how big and popular the drag strip is with any and all car enthusiasts over there.

I'd still have the subaru, hardly a suprise given my history with the cars, but I'd still not spend my hard earned on either tbh. I think it's great that they're bringing the cars to market, I'm not sure many will find homes.
I think there's some valid reasons such as new vs old for starters. Not too mention the GT86 will also cost less to tax, less to fuel, handles better and rather importantly has room for 4.

If you're really wanting to compare used cars, logic would say why even bother with a 350z and just head straight to a 300ZX. Even more savings and back to 4 seats too!

A used Audi RS4, M3 CSL or 630bhp Evo 8. Yes, I can see those would be sensible cars to run on a GT86 sized budget. rolleyes

Clearly where Toyota are going wrong is in manufacturing new cars, they need to start selling second hand ones. Trouble is, where will your Audi, BMW and Mitsubishi come from, since you would have to be fking insane to spend fifty or sixty thousand pounds on a souped up saloon when you could have a used 911 turbo for that money. Of course, what with Porsche only selling used Lamborghinis, that might be a bit of a problem.
