Wasn't the MG Maestro the first in the UK to get a digital dash? about 1983?
Wasn't that spectacular iirc, just different. And it had the annoying voice to go with it. Nice induction roar from the weber carb (s?) though on the early models before they squeezed in the 2 litre lump and went back to conventional dials.

It was gazumped in the UK by the Renault 11 TXE Electronique, which annoyingly was launched a week before...Wasn't that spectacular iirc, just different. And it had the annoying voice to go with it. Here is mine - but the fourth language is Italian and not Spanish (my mate whose feed it is won't change it on there ). As other posters have said, it's not the clearest enunciation ever .

Ah, probably from the same chap who sent me the link last night.
Anyway, it gets home page presence now so non-forum fellows can enjoy too

Bleugh. I hate digidashes. Small info screen in the centre (991-style) with as many auxiliary gauges as possible please!
I'm with you on that. There's no way you can read a digital dash as quickly and easily as a set of dials. With a quick glance, you can see where a needle is and instantly know (roughly) what it says. With most of the digital dashes you have to actually spend time READING it to know what you want to know.
Now a digital representation of a dial, that's a different story...

Same with watches - there was a time when everyone thought digital watches would take over the world but the majority of people have gone back to analogue faces because it's far easier to see. When we were looking at this earlier I was reminded of the only digital dash I wanted when I was a kid, that which was to be found on the Raleigh Vektar. For reasons I can't fathom this was a major bike lust object for the 7 year old me, whereas of course now it just looks like what it was; a Raleigh Mag Burner with a crap body kit.
